Falwell says church must work to defeat Hillary Clinton in '08

Conservative religious leader Rev. Jerry Falwell credited evangelicals for putting President Bush in office in 2004 and said the Christian group now has its eye on defeating Hillary Clinton should she run in the next presidential election.

"The church won the 2004 elections and don't let anyone tell you any differently," Falwell told a crowd of about 9,000 attending Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Conference, a prelude to the two-day annual SBC convention that starts today.

"Now we've got a bigger challenge ahead of us. We've got to deal with Hillary in '08," Falwell said Monday, amid cheers and clapping from audience members in the Gaylord Convention Center in downtown Nashville.

I'd guess. I think he's usually billed as "the chancellor of Liberty University" these days and not as a minister -- don't know if he is pastor of his church anymore.

In any case, you can be sure he's got the legalities covered. He's a slick and smarmy sort.

we have "men of the cloth" preaching from the pulpit all over our nation, and no one does the first thing to stop them. Of course, when you have God's chosen one in the White House enforcement of those divisions between church and state are apt to not be enforced at all, by executive fiat. Just one phone call to the IRS and all conflicts are moot.
They KNOW the legalities, they just ignore them. Their boy is in office, the rules have changed. Any politician that courts these dangerous vermin is selling his soul to the devil. For all of their supposed "holiness", these people are as large a menace to our country as the Taliban was (is) in Afghanistan.

13. How do you know that we have people ignoring the

law in churches all over our nation? Have you personally been in hundreds of churches across the country to see what's going on?

You could be right, but you could just as easily be giving in to paranoia.

We see these far-right "men of the cloth" like Falwell on tv and we get the impression there's a vast throng of ministers like him. But how accurate is that impression? And is the IRS really ignoring complaints about violations of the law?

Don't forget that Democratic politicians go to churches, too, when they're campaigning, and if it's wrong for a preacher to tell his congregation to vote for a Republican, it's equally wrong for another preacher to tell his flock to vote for a Democrat -- OR, possibly, one or both preachers have chosen their words carefully enough that the IRS couldn't prosecute them.

We definitely need to support watchdog groups to prevent abuses.

10. I'm almost willing to bet this is the case

I know of NO ONE who wants it to be Hillary - in virtual or real life (actually, there are two or three people here who champion her, which is more than I know in RL), despite what early polls are saying.

Maybe she's popular amongst the Party Elite, but the rank and file around these parts don't want her.

I swear, if she's foisted on us, maybe we should revolt BEFORE the general election.

7. We need to keep tabs on these people and turn the churches

playing politics into the IRS and local tax authorities. It's not right for them to be tax exempt if they're going to campaign for particular candidates.

I know lots of people contacted the tax authorities and the last I knew he was back pedaling as fast as he could. In fact, didn't he resign from the church? It was probably that or be taxed.
