Zogby: Bush at 44% 'postive', 56% 'negative'

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1005

The survey also shows that in a re-match of the 2004 election, Americans would now vote in equal numbers for Democrat John Kerry and President George W. Bush, while President Bush’s approval rating has plummeted to 44%—the lowest numbers of his presidency.  The poll also found fewer than two-in-five (39%) voters approve of President Bush’s handling of the Iraq war.

The Zogby America survey of 1000 likely voters, conducted from June 20 through 22, 2005, has a margin of error of +/-3.2 percentage points.

The same survey finds Congress’ job rating even lower, with just one-in-four likely voters (26%) rating the legislature favorably—and just 2% saying it is doing an excellent job.

Ignore all the stupid crap about Hillary and McCain- it's just hyping product.

2. Except electronic voting machines assure Bush will always win.
The media allowed the public to believe that an UNPOPULAR president found 16 million NEW VOTES in 4 years and none of his other voters died or were disappointed.

6. I think that this points out more...
That:

1. John Kerry was just not a good candidate. Period. Yes, you can place a lot of blame for that on his campaign team. Over the hill hacks.

2. Since getting back in, the Republican agenda has astutely avoided any and all addressing of issues that concern the average Americans. It has all been ideology and recriminations and naked power grabs and arrogance. People can see that. People generally recoil from that. Remember: America is generally centrist.

3. The war. It isn't going well, it's a mess and the reasons we went there have morphed into something so ill-defined and opaque. They see the money going there by the pallet and they are seeing no return on investment. Many folks remember The Nam, they see it happening again and they want it over. This is a sentiment I see growing. 39% approval on the war is disastrous for the chimp. His words on this, said over and over again are just not resonating.

The sound you hear is that of assholes slamming shut in the house and the senate. Repuke assholes. They know they are vulnerable.

15. yikes

You'll never give up blaming John Kerry for the slow learner problems the Party had, i.e. the Dean and Clark factions, which he had to respect.

17. What Dem campaign team beat the corporate press?
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 01:28 PM by blm
There is none. This is not the same media playing field as 1992.

The public believes Clinton did nothing about terror and that's why we were attacked on 9-11. Clinton had a book, a promotional tour and lots of airtime to refute that perception, and yet it persists.

Even the most talented politician is defined mostly by the corporate media. The best part of any Dem campaign is laying on the floors of editing rooms in corporate news rooms all across the country.

exactly.

My wife was always amazed, during last year's campaign, when she'd speak with her parents who are liberal, loyal democrats, who didn't have cable and didn't surf the net much.

Her parents were convinced that Kerry wasn't fighting back at all. And why shouldn't they be? They never saw his speeches unedited. They saw next to nothing of the web advocates who were calling Team Bush on their bullshit.

My in-laws wanted to see a fight, but they never did--in their part of Red State America, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Chimpy was going to win.

21. Not sure I totally agree
"Since getting back in, the Republican agenda has astutely avoided any and all addressing of issues that concern the average Americans. It has all been ideology and recriminations and naked power grabs and arrogance. People can see that. People generally recoil from that. Remember: America is generally centrist."

My perception is that to the dems, they seem to be making naked power grabs, but to the fundies they seem to be sitting around with their thumbs in their bums. What has Bush seriously done for his fundie base? He campaigned as a fundie, but it seems to have been a bait-and-switch: he's now governing as a secularist. Like, seriously, they could ban abortion tomorrow if they wanted to, but the fact of the matter is that they just don't really care enough to risk alienating the mythical center.

3. McCain would be difficult to beat if he is nominated
I know we should ignore early polls like that, but the media is in love with him. Most Americans get their information from the corporate media and they will make sure that Saint John is elected.

7. I just hope Mccain realizes he is too weak to run for Pres
I know his health has not been so good. After the 2000 election, bush took office and that meant no 2004 run for Mccain. By 2008 he is going to be over the hill. So I hope.

19. I agree
Other polls show McCain beating Hillary, Kerry and others in 2008 by a smaller margin, but if he gets the Repuke nomination, he will be very, very hard to beat no matter whom we nominate.

34. Apparently Freepers hate McCain & he'll lose the Repuke nom.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1409586/posts

Plenty of McCain bashing over in freeperville. So our best bet to get a Dem in the WH in '08 is to side with the Freepers and hope he loses the Repuke nomination?

Freeper example post:
"The Dem's new tactic is to nominate their own candidate for the president for the republican Party. McCain McCain McCain

First the movie, much more to come. In a Clinton - McCain race the Dem's win either way, a liberal in the WH"

I used to get Zogby polls on the average of every 2 weeks. NONE since then. If this is any indication of their polling methods, my bet is that Bush is a hell of a lot lower.

9. ???????????
Numbers show significant disapproval of * and the repub congress, but a re-match would be even between * and Kerry?

Are there really so many that refuse to vote for their own best interests or will vote agaist their own better judgement?

If * and the repubs are doing so badly, why vote for them?

18. The article says Kerry has been gaining since November
and is now statistically tied for the first time since then. The trend is what matters. This also is a poll of likely voters, and they tend to be more conservative than the electorate at large.

26. people tend to rationalize their decisions
Someone who voted for bush but now disapprove can tell themselves:

1) they made a bad decision because they are stupid (not likely)
2) they made the best of a bad decision (yeah, but Kerry would have worse)
or
3) they made a bad decision because they were tricked

Many bush voters are probably thinking 2. Hopefully, they'll move toward 3 as more info gets out.

12. This tells us we need a stronger message and campaign for 08.
People hate life under GWB but they aren't turning to us for the solution. This is not encouraging. I don't know whether Kerry just isn't able to overcome the Rove machine or the democratic message (whatever it is) is not selling.

Is it Bush they hate, the republicans they hate, the republican Congressional leaders they hate or the war they hate?

Will 08 voters just choose a Bush lite (e.g. McCain) who will do everything Bush does except start another war?
