My Grandfather was a close friend of Senator Mansfield. My Uncle Mike was named for him and later was his senate page. He just told me a story how he used to carry Bobby Kennedy's briefcase for him every morning, because RFK didn't have enough seniority to have a page, but Senator Mansfield allowed him to use my uncle whenever he needed some help. Pretty special stuff.

He was great. A real gentleman and scholar. He knew what he was doing.

I wonder if there is anyone even remotely like him in the Senate today. Or even someone with the potential to become as statesmanlike and effective.

I doubt it, because it's not the same institution it was when Mike Mansfield served.

Didn't he end up as Ambassador to Japan? What a career.
