Friend upset with the todays Supreme court ruling on property rights
My friend who is a Bill Oreilly fan called me today just to ask
"do you know what happened today?"
I said no I haven't read the news yet. He then went on to tell me all
about the Supreme court ruling that Pfizer Corp. went to court and was
able to get a ruling that would allow them to take some land from home
owners to build there new research center on the water front.

Homes may be 'taken' for private projects
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8331097/

He went on again to tell me what this mean in his opinion and how frighting
it was. He even mentioned this being something you might expect to read in
the book '1984' . He was adamantly upset and I was proud he was interested
in this.

After finishing the book "Don't think of an elephant" I realize I can
invoke a frame on this topic to show how I feel. But I'm unsure what to
say behind "Oh those Republicans always want more power for the corporations"
which will probably not help my cause to convert this man.

Any thoughts on a frame for this topic?

This ruling is so upsetting.. and utterly counterintuitive the way the justices voted.

I will never understand it!

4. My first thought was this was going to upset all sorts of folks.
I started laughing when I heard this news. Not that it was funny, but that people from the entire political spectrum were going to be really upset about this. (disclaimer, what follows is broad brush assumptions, not to call anyone names or lable anyone, but just to give examples) The conservatives that want gvt out of their lives. The liberals who want their civil rights upheld. People who believe they can own land. People who want to be able to do what they want with their place, or at least not be harassed by the gvt.

I am glad your friend is upset. It is upsetting. I am sorry to not answer your "frame" question, but I don't know what you mean beyond agreeing that it is very scary and upsetting and that people need to wake up and smell the politicians. Oh, and Mr.bush wants to put another anti-rights judge on the supreme court.

6. The city actually went to court because it was sued by homeowners.

7. This is a loss for Americans all over and a real joke it happened
when liberals were not in control of our government!

8. This has been going on for years now.
It is called community redevelopment. The idea is to take properties that don't generate much tax revenue, buy them and build something on them that will generate tax income. Many cities have built large shopping centers or otherwise improved what are called "blighted" communities through this use of the eminent domain right of the government. The people whose land is taken must be given "just compensation" under the Constitution. It sounds unfair, but actually, it isn't so bad, and there is not much you can do about it. Remember the government took our land from the Indians to give it to us. There is nothing new about this, so there is no point in getting excited about it. There is a legal process for determining the value of the land.
