Poll question: Should U.S. Curb China's Rising Power?
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 06:27 AM by Truth Hurts A Lot
Question on Washington Journal.

Brian Lamb says the US population is approx. 296M; China's population is 1.3B. Should China be stopped? If so how?

My take? This nation is overrun by greedy corporations, and our government refuses to grant equal education to all of its citizens. Another country was bound to surpass the US sooner or later. Get used to it.

2. Other: Can't be done.
Or rather, we will pay a severe price for it later. All we can do is delay it.

Even if we could, we shouldn't.

3. Danger danger...We should not let them buy
American companies and we should pay them back all the $ we owe them, remain friendly and invite them to parties but NEVER allow them to have this much control over our country. (he who controls the $, has all the power) Maybe we'll end us just being a new Provence of China with all the enmeshment going on now.

5. It's a bit late to be calling for that now
What you're seeing with Unocal is most likely the first of its kind. There will be plenty more as China continues to grow as a future superpower.

We are already so dependent upon China for consumer products. A dizzying array of products from consumer electronics to the mundane are now "Made in China." It's too late not to be dependent upon them.

We are already hooked on the drug, the drug of greed that led to this situation. There will be a time for a painful drug intervention and terrible withdrawal symptoms.

We all have to learn this lesson, even those of us who didn't need to learn it again. Such a dangerous situation. I just wish that China was a trustworthy nation. I am afraid that if push comes to shove China will hop in bed with N. Korea. Enough said.

using whatever power we have at our disposal, as does any other country.

In my opinion, letting China buy up so much of our debt and letting them purchase our oil companies is not in our interest. Taking steps to prevent that, and keeping our rivals at a distance is a good idea.

Countries all over the world do the same thing, just at a smaller scale that often doesn't get reported in the MSM.

I'm sorry that the idea of the US doing what is best for itself offends you.

On edit: by "whatever power", I obviously don't mean things like nuclear war etc. I don't want anyone to misinterpret me.

As to you tackling the China issue well yes its a issue that need to be resolve. Anyway its a mess. Every major corporation is running over there to have a peice of the action. What you expect China to do
Christ shake the corruption there in unbeleivable. And who is giving all the money The corporation.

To clarified I just got agitated by China being called untrustworty.
It is unhealthy. Let China sort out her problem. The inflow of cash so much cash in investment is a big problems. They know it. Why do you think they just open 2 area in China and limit everyone there to this 2 area. Jesus imagine the chaos is they open the whole of China for grabs by this Coporation.

16. Hey the US has a screwed up foreign policy
as well as on ongoing struggle to keep our heads above water and have integrity but I don't think we need a country whose human rights violations are (as far as I know) worse than ours to tell us how to be. No offense to China but I would have a hard time obeying what they ask of their citizens. No the US is supposed to be a democratic nation I'd like to see it return or become what it's meant to be not what it has become and worse. However, your right we've become alot like countries we talk down about.

been reading UK and alternate US media. I never inferred that I thought our country was treating POW's or terrorists with respect. I have found our shortcomings unacceptable. You are talking to the wrong person about this issue.

Again, I am still an American and must say that I will do everything in my power to see that our elected officials behave, however as you can see it is very difficult. I still do not want to be ruled by other doctrine, I want democracy without religious fanatics shoving their propaganda down our throats. I want this country to be a good country, what it's supposed to be, one that practices humane treatment of all other human beings. This is where I was born and until they kick me out I am going to FIGHT back when harmful laws or practices are occurring in OUR (all American's) name.

The Chinese goverment understand their problems
They doing well in a control growth environment
Dont expect overnight success.... moving forward is better than nothing. And China is doing that. In Asia China has explain this long ago and to us its a none issue an exceptance that they are trying to and an understanding of the challenges they face.

Whereas in US ... sigh .... its moving backward

The problems with US is that they always beleive they are right or their way is the only way

They dont do their work to understand the problems on the ground level

And they end up looking like bullies and foolish to the rest of the world.

I guess to many the world begins and end at the US border.

The world doesn't revolve around America, we know this. We have many problems to address and soltions to find for them. We as a people are working to better ourselves and our country. Like you said it does take time for things to change. Don't give up on America, we'll get it right eventually, no matter how it looks now, things always change.

33. You must dedicate the rest of your natural life to this cause
The times have already started to change. A train, when already put in motion, is terribly difficult to stop. It can take miles just to stop it, and it would take more power to make it go in reverse.

My advice to you is that you should prepare now. You should prepare for the worst. I am already making long-term preparations to become an expatriate. If I am forced to put my plans into motion, then my future will not be inside the US. It will be overseas somewhere. My friend who is also "awake" politically is more dead-set on leaving than I at this point. He sees the writing on the wall.

In the meantime, we'll simply fight with what we're given and hope it's enough. If there is to be a crash, then we could aim for a soft landing instead of slamming straight into the ground full-speed like a jetliner out of control.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:08 PM by Selatius
I'm just prepared to bail out if everything else fails. I would rather not chain myself to the ground if I had the choice. You have to prepare for the worst and hope (or fight) for the best. If the worst comes, I'd rather escape to fight another day, not get crushed in a hopeless display of resistance.

You can call it cowardice. I call it a last resort plan to continue the fight after the fall.

4. The European nations gave up their old empires, so can we
They're not doing too bad today. The entire world used to be carved up and divided between the colonial superpowers, but they are gone, but the ordinary people remain.

The meek shall inherit the earth. That statement was aimed at ordinary people, people subject to the whims of their masters.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 06:56 AM by Selatius
Don't you think ordinary workers would stop the whole process if they could? They didn't ask for all the factory jobs to disappear from the US and end up in China.

It's the leaders who generally set the policy, and it's only a matter of tricking people into accepting things that hurt them.

The European masters were forced to give it up. The World Wars pretty much eliminated a good number of them, and the last war bankrupted the whole continent and laid waste to everything else. They had to give it up because it became the only option and because folks around the world were becoming politically aware such as those in colonial India at the time. It could not last; it was unsustainable.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 07:20 AM by Selatius
You think that impresses New Delhi that we, a supposedly democratic nation, would support a military dictatorship in a country that has been at odds with India over the last 50 years since the end of British colonial rule?

It's a great recipe for alienating the last power on earth that could conceivably check China's power. Instead of dealing with one future world economic power, only our leaders would be so blinded by greed that they would pick a fight with another future world power in India.

I'm sure the blinded Hitler thought it was fine and dandy that he found he was fighting a superpower in the west and another superpower to the east.

20. India's last election
saw a massive swing away from a right wing Hindu nationalist government, the BJP, toward Congress.

Congress' leader, Sonia Gandhi, refused to become PM, presumably fearing assassination, and Mohanman Singh (I think) is the new PM. Unfortunately he is the old finance minister who started the free-market and privatisation nonsense that the last government inherited and carried further with gusto.

So, in terms of economics, it makes little difference in regard to left or right wingery.

All this is dredged from my all too wobbly memory, so any corrections gratefully received!

8. I think that we should
be careful about allowing China to purchase US companies.

But it does occur to me that one strategy would be to support "balance" by encouraging other countries like India. There was a meeting of all the Southeast Asian countries and Australia last summer. It received almost no press in the US. I believe that it was exploring an "European Union" of Asian countries. This should be supported and encouraged.

And last, we have to get our financial house in order. It's stupid to give any country that much say in our financial future.

China would not be a threat if corporate amerika were not pooring $$$$ into their economy at the expense of ours.

China is like almost every other threat that exists on this planet---THE FRICKIN REPUKES & THEIR GREED HAVE CREATED THE THREAT.

Get China's currency off the dollar or race severe tariffs. Americans are getting completely screwed over both by greedy corporations and two governments who don't care about the American people. It's time to make a serious change unless we want to turn into a third-world country. We export raw materials and import manufactured goods. That sounds an awful lot like a 18th-century British colony.

Ultimately, if Chinese-like conditions are imposed on the American workforce, said Americans will rise up against their oppressors--who will be Americans working for Chinese companies. A lot of yuppies will be seen hanging from lampposts. The country will become ungovernable and unprofitable, Chinese businesses will pull out, and we will be left with several countries, some of which might manage to survive, but most of which will be plunged in a dark age. All this is inevitable. It's almost cute to think that the WASPs of our ruling class would think they can "do something about it."

35. Yes: by building up American middle class (good wages, good education)
America should ALWAYS strive to be the best, and we should have the courage and conviction that we can be the best if we compete fairly on a level playing field. And we should also realize that we can also win long term sometimes when in the short term we recognize that someone else is beating us on a level playing field and our reaction is to try harder rather than to undermine the country we lost to in a fair competition.

36. People should stop freaking out about China
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:04 PM by AngryAmish
Remember in the 80s people were freaking out about Japan? They were buying America and all that stuff.

It turned out that a lot of the wealth to buy America from Japan came from loans on real estate in Japan. The banks in Japan were corrupt/threatened (Yakuza) in giving lots of bad loans. The Japanese gov't did not let banks fail. Corruption created the 12+ year recession in Japan.

Well, China is kinda doing the same thing. A lot of China's money is coming from sweetheart loans from Chinese banks. NOBODY believes the books of a Chinese bank. Nobody believes the books of any Chinese firm - the gov't is going to bail out the Shanghai stock market because no one is willing to invest because the books are all cooked.

China has a vast population, but also has 3 million people living in caves. The Communists run things and they are completely corrupt. This corruption will hurt their prospects to bring up the whole population to first world standards.

However, if there is a bad recession or depression, there will be a revolution. If there is a revolution, there will be a civil war and tens of millions will die again.

Happy Friday!
