UN Experts 'Deeply Regret' Us Failure To Allow Guantanamo Visit On Torture Report
Senior United Nations human rights experts today deeply regretted the United States Government's failure so far to allow them to visit detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan or Guantanamo Bay naval base following information "from reliable sources" of serious allegations of torture.

<snip>
"It is our conviction that no Member State of the United Nations is above international human rights law," they added. "Due to the seriousness of the allegations, the lack of cooperation and given the responsibilities to our respective mandates, we will jointly conduct an investigation based on all credible sources regarding the situation of the detainees in Guantanamo Bay."

<snip>
"Such requests were based on information, from reliable sources, of serious allegations of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees, arbitrary detention, violations of their right to health and their due process rights. Many of these allegations have come to light through declassified Government documents," it added.

(edited to add a more provocative title :) )

Call them and tell them you are outraged!

Phone the AP at +1-212-621-1500

I've sent an email to info@ap.org to get a list of their editors and writers, will report back if I get the list.

9. I think you have turned over a rock...
and there is a nugget under it. Yes, the Bush Administration knew the UN was asking these questions for the last few months, even if we the people did not know. (Thanks media!) That is why they have been making threats to them - some threats in the open - such as threatening to cut the funds in half. This was meant to bribe some of the needier members of the UN. And that is exactly why Bush chose Bolton for the position at the UN. He is Bush's henchman. He would have made the UN do the bidding of George Bush. That is his specialty.

11. This is what I sent out on the DU media blaster:
Subject line: Outrage! United Nations to Investigate Torture at Guantanamo because US has not allowed visit

Please report ! -

In the same week that President Bush told reporters they should go see Guantanamo for themselves if they were concerned - the United Nations has issued a press release indicating that ONE YEAR after the UN requested US permission to visit detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan or Guantanamo Bay, the United States Government has failed to allow them to do so.

Further, from the UN Press Release: "It is our conviction that no Member State of the United Nations is above international human rights law," they added. "Due to the seriousness of the allegations, the lack of cooperation and given the responsibilities to our respective mandates, we will jointly conduct an investigation based on all credible sources regarding the situation of the detainees in Guantanamo Bay."

12. So that is why we have seen new videos of the prisoners ...
at Quantanamo...They want the world to see how well they are treated and well they are fed with the lemon chicken etc. They want people to see, for the first time, the "new" video of prisoners playing soccer and enjoying themselves. Yes, they are marketing the "new" Quantanamo.

longer before the rest of the world says no to Bush & CO.
3 more years, will the number of US. troops pass the 5-6000 mark? fighting terrorism and spreading deomocracy?

What ever happened to the WMD's story, how did Balir and Bush be allowed to skate on that one, it is the reason for the "shock n awe"
