I Am Much Concerned About A Cornered Bush and Tuesday's Speech
This is a man who follows Henry Ford's advice without fail, "Never explain, never apologize". Rove's strategy has been unwavering as well, Hit them with something they did not see coming, attack their strengths not their weaknesses, and never explain anything you have done.

So what will Tuesday hold? If he stoops to explain that all is well in Iraq then he has lost. He has no ground on which to stand to address any domestic issue. Bolton will be slipped thought on a recess appointment over the 4th of July weekend so he's not going to draw any attention to it. The North Koreans have not done anything outrageous in weeks and maybe the madman of the east is not so mad after all. He may call again for his version of an energy policy but it simply does not rise to the occasion as a distraction.

No, it seems to me that the only trick up George's sleeve has to be Iran. The only other thing would be the display of a dead or captive Ossama. The latter is not likely because it would be impossible to scoop Al-Jeezera on his capture or at least impossible to hold it quite for days.

As I said, Tuesday has me much concerned.

2. no need to worry
every time the "prez" makes a much hyped important speech on the topic of the day, it fizzles--especially when prime time tv spots are demanded.

He'll say:

9-11, 9-11, 9-11...

terrorists trying to break our will...

9-11, 9-11, 9-11...

no timetable...

social security.

5. I also was thinking they'd pull Osama out of the hat.
"See, we got him! Smoked him out! And we got Saddam! Out of his spider hole! We're turning the corner!" Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Iran will need another incident. Seems weird that they would let the public know they are planning an incident though.

11. Yeah But Goss Already Said They Knew Exactly Where He Was!
AND???? I mean how can he get away with Osama again?? A broken record is a broken record! Not to mention that he always looks so "smarmy" when he speaks.

With support waning, is he really going to pull the "I stand my ground" act again?? You bet he is! But I'm not sure it's working as well. And his problem is that HE doesn't UNDERSTAND it!

I won't be watching because the sight of him disgusts me. And it's mind boggling to think he's the best we've got to offer the world. It's INSANE!

Remember that old thing about telling lies, sometimes you can't remember who you told what! Then there's the other one that says... You can fool some of the people all of the time, you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you CAN'T fool ALL of the people ALL of the time! And the fact that they are beginning to believe their own lies is what will finally get them.

Right now, it's a small leak in a big boat, but if the pressure keeps building maybe then the flood-gates will open and they will DROWN!! Karma, karma, karma!
Think Left -- Be Right!

...probably say a whole bunch of nothing. But, you're right, he is cornered. And, even though it's exactly where he deserves to be, I'm afraid of what he might do to get out of it. I know this much, though: whatever he does, it will cost lives.

I read a long time ago, somewhere, that Israel would take out Iran's nuclear capabilities, for us.....and am I recalling correctly that Israel, struck Iraq's nuclear facilities at Tawaitha? Considering that it has now become apparent that we were attacking Iraq, long before we officialy went to "war"....what's to say we don't already have our hand in the cookie jar in Iran?

There will be something that happens or some new intel that

14. I see one of two possibilities
One, he won't say anything new, nothing of any substance. The pundits will be scratching their heads over why in the world he called for air time to say nothing. This would be risky, because as we all know, the beast must be fed, and the commentators will fill their allotted air time with a lot of speculation, and as you rightly pointed out, Chimpy's recent track record doesn't bear much scrutiny.

Or two, he will come out with another daring, hare-brained scheme to spend a lot of our tax dollars on a "crisis" that only he and his corrupt henchmen can see. I think this to be the slightly more likely scenario, and it will let all of us gauge whether the stenographic pool we laughingly call our independent media have truly broken with the Bush administration. If they all go on and lovingly repeat Dear Leader's words, we will all know that Lil George has another three months at least of smooth sailing.

But if the media call bullshit on the hare-brained scheme, there are still two possibilities: The media will simply forget all about his latest stupidity, just like they forgot all about Chimpy's promised weekly addresses last year about this time regarding Iraq. The first conference went over like a fart in church, and the next five press conferences were quickly scrubbed. I rate this as more likely than not.

The worst case scenario for Stupidhead is that the media decide he's bullshitting, hold him responsible for the bullshit, and start demanding some real accountability from the administration. And Bush is to accountability like oil is to water.

19. I don't know what his hare-brained scheme might be
But is Lil George announces that it's clobberin' time for Iran (possibly under the influence of the new Fantastic Four movie), then we need to watch the media:

If the media solemnly repeat every unverifiable bit of poppycock that Bush tries to peddle, then we'll know we're pretty well fucked.

If, however, the media start asking pertinent questions: Who are we going to invade Iran with? Where's our coalition? Didn't they just hold elections? What's our invasion pretext? Don't we have a little (and more than a little) unfinished business in Afghanistan and Iraq? We will then know that Little George might want to start getting referrals for attorneys to represent him in impeachment proceedings.

18. Remember a year ago, when Georgie was going to give 5 speeches. . .
one a week, leading up the transfer of authority in Iraq. He made it through the first speech, it was considered by all to be an unmitigated disaster, and he gave no further speeches before the transfer. I expect the same with this effort.

22. Yes I remember
At the time it infuriated me, first that these were clearly meant to shore up his standing and were a flagrant use of the presidential pulpit for campaigning, and second that not one major news organization ever asked "what happened to the other four speeches you promised." The first, at the Army War College (I think) was pathetic, dull, inarticulate, and embarassing. You could see KKKarl was gonna pull the plug on the plan right away. But it was just another lie he got away with.

20. I share these concerns... either speech will be the usual "freedom on the
march, they hate us for our freedoms, stay the course" etc., which is nothing to worry about, or it will be some kind of surprise.

I agree the surprise would be most likely announcing Osama capture, or some trumped up crap to promote war with Iran.

Having spent all the money, blood, and credibility with WMD and Iraq, and even Repub America getting sick of war, I don't know how he could sell Iran at all unless they really feel they've got all the electronic voting locked up and no longer care how they're perceived.

I'm not even sure how much Osama capture would help their cause at this point as the war is so distasteful, but it'd at least give him some kind of short term bump.

23. I don't think....
.... they could keep an Osama capture under wraps long enough to do a televised announcement.

I really think that the Dictatortot hasn't figured it out yet. As recently as a week or two ago, he was still talking about SS, and 3 days ago he was talking about how we cannot give the enemy a timetable for withdrawal.

I think the Dim Son thinks his words have persuasive powers. I think that he mistook the angry compliance of Americans post 9/11 as indications of his oratory superpowers. In short, I think he thinks he's going to get on TV, spout the same canned, tired bullshit, and the polls are going to change.

We'll see.

28. Yes,, more distraction from the Iraquagmire. Get up in front of
nothing less than a captive audience and announce some new evil in the world that our brave and heroic troops can conquer. No disrespect intended, but the troops always seem to get the worst end of the stick when shrubbish opens his slack jawed mouth. Sure he praises them but talk is cheap oil boy.

Don't forget that he will need to dis the dems big time. He will speak of political rancor and divisiveness and the need to to work across party lines to do the work of the American people. He will come across as the great healer of broken dreams.

He will also take this opportunity to address the dire need to dismantle,,, er fix, social security. The new leisure class, retirees, can just work another few years. With any luck they will die earlier and get of the dole. Hey, we're gonna need them retirees on the job once the draft sucks all the working men and women into the service,,, whoops,, did I just say that?

33. I think you're all forgetting
the reason he has to give this speech in the first place. His support and support for the war are in the proverbial shitter and he has to shore it up before it becomes an impeachment hearing.

So just how will he do that?

He'll wave the bloody shirt of 9/11 again. He'll "remind" us that we're at war and how terrible and sneaky our enemies are and then do his best John Wayne imitation to remind us that we're safe as long as we support him.

Right now NOTHING is more important to him than regaining his standing in the polls...without it his whole domestic agenda is in the toilet...if he has our "goodwill" over the war on terror, we're more likely to trust his domestic agenda. :puke:

unfortunately, that's the way they think in the WH...

39. Oh yes,,, 9/11. Need to get more mileage out of that. Maybe
thats why poochie Rove was in NY last week,,, softening up the ground so shrubbish can pick the cherries.

9/11 plays well in front of an audience of military men and women, which is where the speech will be STAGED, but I think that cow has been milked dry.

There is some new evil, ohhhh, lets say Iran and their nukelar ambitions. Our military is in a strategic position to spy and conduct clandestine activity there. We will be in Iraq for many, many years to come. At least till the oil is gone.

Your are right,,, he will tell us all about the uncertainty and danger in the world. He will sow seeds of fear and doubt and explain to the world that the strong repukian party and fundy right are the light and salvation.

This has been SOP for them for 20 years now.

to think that we could take on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran.

According to the CIA, Iraq's about the size of California, Afghanistan's slightly smaller than Texas, and Iran's "slightly larger than ALASKA!!!!!!!!!!!!" (emphasis mine)

Even the dumbest freeper has to realize that our armed forces can't possibly occupy an area of land that big. Cities, mountains, deserts, marshes, forests.... it's over 1/3 the size of the contiguous US.

Afghanistan and Iraq have 26 million each, while Iran has 68 million. This is a total civilian population of 120 million, or 2/5 the population of the US.

Not gonna happen.

36. The standard way would be to promise to campaign for them
But really, imagine you're a GOP congressman (don't retch, just imagine for a moment).

You have polls telling you that most of your constituents think the war was a bad idea from the start, that it was based on lies. They're also very worried about the economy, about their jobs.

As a Republican Congressman, do you really want Bozo the Flatline Dimwit showing up to babble at your constituents? Probably not, in most cases.

I think Bush needs to offer his congressional minions something solid. I think he has nothing to offer beyond the standard threaten-to-kill-your-entire-family approach that this White House seems to be so fond of.

38. I can imagine America's collective eyes rolling if Bush cries 'wolf' on
Iran. I believe they are at this moment scouring speeches that were deemed successful at the time (Convention speech, State of the Union, etc) and cannibalizing from them to craft something to at least keep his poll numbers from their freefall.
But, they are counting on a public that is just as ignorant now as it was then.
I believe they are in for a surprise. The more upbeat his speech...the worse it will be.
We might have reason to worry, though, if he actually admitted some mistakes and asked for people's understanding and patience. In light of the DSM, I doubt that would even work now.
