Bayh on the road, but all options open

Senator seen as a strong contender in presidential run.

By JAMES WENSITS
Tribune Political Writer

Is U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh running for president?

The answer is definitely yes. And no, or at least, not yet.

According to Steve Bouchard, director of Bayh's All-America PAC, the Hoosier Democrat is "doing the preliminary things one needs to do if they're going to make that decision."

In other words, Bayh is running while keeping his options open and trying to decide whether he has a decent shot at a successful bid for the White House.

"He doesn't want to do anything to rule out that option," said Bouchard, adding that Bayh also wants to make sure the option is a viable one.

1. Bayh can win in 2008. Hillary or Kerry would lose.

2. No way I'm voting for Bayh. He's too pro-war and too pro-corporate for me
And those are the same reasons I won't vote for Hillary, Biden, or any other DLC clown.

3. As a potential candidate, I am more concerned
with Bayh's lack of message, charisma and gravitas heading into a presidential election. I was born and raised in Indiana, most of my family still lives there and he wins because of his daddy and the fact that he remains cautiously moderate in his positions. Frankly, he doesn't stake many public positions.

As a campaigner he'd do worse than either Kerry or Gore did imho. As an aside, I don't think that Kerry did poorly but Gore was definitely not up to his game. Bayh would make us long for either of those former candidates out on the stump.

12. I will bet Bayh morphs into a liberal just in time for the primaries
His team knows that his "cautiously moderate" positions will not sell the red meat the Democratic base prefers.

7. Yeah, I'm getting tired of the media and THEIR "viable"
options.

Hell, I was tired of it last time around.

11. Bayh called the Iraq War a "highminded and noble undertaking"
in his opening kiss-ass statement to Rumsfield during the latter's appearance in front of the 9/11 Commission. His "questions" to Rummy afterwards were set-ups for Rummy to lie his head off some more.

Last week, I watched as Bayh smiled fatuously at Rumsfield as Rummy started spouting Orwellian reality bites and it made me sick.

He's the DLC Chairman for a reason, I suppose.
