because there are always nervous people out there who really, really want to believe in the guy even when they know he's a lying sack of shit who's bungled everything he's touched. They'll react favorably to the verbal Pablum until the constant trickle of bad news about the economy, the wars, nothing done about terrorism, offshoring, and all the rest of it sink in again.

3. It was a disaster. Bush will sink like a mafia stoolie.

All of the doubts in recent polls about Bush were about the DSM, and Bush's competence, and the reasons for going to war. People wanted Bush to clear things up, and to give them hope that the war has a purpose. He did none of that. He even reinforced some of their worst suspicions by saying we would stay there as long as it takes, thus confirming that he has no plan to get us out and no clear idea of what victory even means.

His numbers will be in the 30s by Monday, even if he pulls off some summer surprise.

Although they say that talk is cheap, empty rhetoric can actually be an effective tool in giving you a temporary boost. That is, unless you sound like a FUCKING MORON when you speak.
