GOP Senator: Nobody Eager To Move On Social Security

WASHINGTON -- The Republican chairman of the Senate committee charged with producing a Social Security bill said his colleagues "all want it to go away."

But Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley said he won't drop the issue even though his own committee is in a logjam.

Another Republican on Grassley's committee, Oregon's Gordon Smith, said recent proposals are "little more than just talk."

Smith said Democrats are to blame for stalled negotiations. They've refused to budge in their opposition to the private investment accounts proposed by President George W. Bush.

Democrats argue that the accounts would require benefit cuts, steep government borrowing and put guaranteed checks at risk.
