MoD plans Iraq troop withdrawal

The Ministry of Defence has drafted plans for a significant withdrawal of British troops from Iraq over the next 18 months and a big deployment to Afghanistan, the Financial Times has learnt.

In what would represent the biggest operational shake-up involving the armed forces since the Iraq war, the first stage of a run-down in military operations is likely to take place this autumn with a handover of security to Iraqis in at least two southern provinces.

1. Not sure I understand it thoroughly

but basically the Prime Minister dictates this policy. If he is unyielding like let's say he's run himself up a tree the way Blair has, so that he can't come down without admitting that all of his dogmatic absolute statements were wrong, then the troop deployment policy will change only if you change the Prime Minister. Or maybe have some pictures of him with a sheep.

2. These bombings were almost definitely weeks in the planning.

I think it's obvious that they were supposed to make a statement about G8.

3. Iraq is Al Qaeda's training ground. They NEED a war in Iraq.

So, it is in their best interest to keep GB and the US all hot and bothered and militarily engaged in Iraq.

This is one reason why Al Qaeada might respond to a threat to pull out British troops with a bombing of London.
