Governor Warner (VA) Slams Bush for 'Missed Opportunity'
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 10:05 AM by nickshepDEM
Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) criticized President Bush yesterday for missing an opportunity after the 2001 terrorist attacks to rally Americans around solving some of the nation's intractable problems.

After a speech to journalists at the National Press Club in downtown Washington, Warner said that the country yearned to shed partisan differences after the attacks and come together toward a common purpose. Warner said Bush could have gathered support for such goals as cutting the federal deficit, increasing energy independence and aiding a struggling educational system.

"I wish and pray that it would have happened," Warner said. "Instead, what we got was that folks like me got a tax break. Most Americans are told to go about their daily lives. And, too often, the only people that were asked for sacrifice were the members and families of our active duty, Guard and Reserve."

"Is our nation truly safer if that key first-responder is guarding an airport in Saudi Arabia as opposed to potentially providing those very, very essential services back here at home?" Warner asked.

15. Exactly what was said throughout 2003-4, but media only chooses NOW to
print it?

Why now? Because they don't have to keep the Bush boy propped up for an election?

4. So Warner he's warming up on his "National Security" credentials?
Good for him....although I don't know if making comments count as "experience".

He's sooooooo 1992! (but I guess that '92 was a pretty good year) :)

7. Looking more & more like a Prez run for Va Gov Mark Warner
In Virginia, many of us were kinda hoping he'd take on Senator A**hole Allen, but Warner probably would have announced by now if he was going to challenge Allen in the 2006 Senate race. So he gets some national exposure in 2008 (and who knows what else -- governors do pretty good in presidential races!) and can run for an open Senate seat later on when John Warner (Republican & no relation to Mark) retires.

13. John Warner's 79 so it sure is possible he'll pass on
reelection bid in 2008. But he's also a tough old buzzard so who knows.

Mark Warner might could jump into a 2008 Senatorial race if he's out of the Presidential primaries early on. If he's actually got some momentum, and/or thinks he's got a chance at a VP slot, then obviously Senate run in 2008 is out.

9. I finally saw Mark Warner speak on cspan recently
and I must say that I was pleased. If Wes Clark doesn't run in 2008, than Warner has my support.

Why is it so great that Warner is saying what others have been saying for "I don't know how long?"

What new about that?

The terrorists hit London in 2005....and Warner is talking about 2001?

If this is the kind of "political timing" that we can look forward to, this is not good. :eyes:

23. You mean.....the General?
Yes, he was telling it like it was when it was relevant....

At this point, Warner is talking about what's already been talked about.

He's late.

is all....

24. Really....
We will still be at war, war on terror...etc..

To put a one term (no F/P or NS exp) governor at top of the ticket?

And to give a former Commander in chief NATO Allied Supreme Commander 4 star general as VP?

Is what I expect from the Stoopify me Party.

I hope the Dems are smarter than that!
