"War on Terra" -- WHAT?
I am so sick of hearing "War on Terra", "War on Terraism" and the like. WE CANNOT WAGE WAR ON A TACTIC ... What's next? The "War on Sarcasm"? The "War on Intimidation"? The Cold War could be more accurately described as the "War on Communism" -- a system of government you CAN fight. Even the so-called "War on Poverty" was technically winnable (we could potentially wipe out poverty in this country with proper commitment). But like the ill-named "War on Drugs," there is no way we will ever be able to eradicate "terrorism" unless we commit to wiping out every schoolyard bully on the face of this planet who terrorizes his classmates, etc., etc. By calling this a "war" as he did, Our Braindead Leader has assured that it will NEVER END ... until the human race is history (and sometimes I wonder if he has any interest in preventing that).

3. That's the most brilliant thing I've ever read.
(Pre-emptive pandering, to be followed by a volley of condescension. Soon, I'll start to spread ennui everywhere.)

6. Be careful spreading ennui. You'll get it on your hands and won't care.

14. (grin)
As I look again at my little joke, I still have to laugh -- it just came to me without thinking but I'm seeing the punning allusion to the idiom of 'time on your hands' and take a certain perverse pride in having a mind sick enough that it came to me automatically. (I'd say "uninvited," but I'd erect large roadsigns if it'd help.) Those hours spent in the library reading Benchley and Thurber and Mencken fifty years ago as a kid still count, I guess. Theirs is the kind of wicked prose that can get me laughing until I get tears in my eyes so bad I can't read.

Oh well ... so much for thinking off.

4. Exactly.
What the RW refuses to admit is that the only way to combat terrorism is to get people to stop committing acts of terrorism. And to do that, you have to know why they're doing it in the first place. Is it political action? Religious fervor? Just plain-ol' whackiness? What? The RW solution seems to be ever-more escalating "security" measures - more screening, more rules, more lines, more weapons, less privacy, more intrusion, etc. The RW also refuses to believe there could be another point of view besides their own. Terrorists strike because they believe they are justified in retaliation. When an innocent family member is killed by an errant bomb, perhaps, what do you think that looks like to them? Maybe like terrorism?

Nah, the RW portrays them as comic book villains, people who wake up one day and decide to be "evil." That thinking is getting us abso-fucking-lutely nowhere.

12. Actually
the best way to combat terrorism IMHO is to refuse to be terrorized. Which is the exact opposite of what Bushco would have us do.

9. Terrorism,
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 04:55 PM by FrenchieCat
is an ideological issue which can not be solved by a military solution.

It's really that simple.

If you have a minute, please listen to how Wes Clark concretely suggests that we solve the ideological divide that is creating individuals mad enough to want to wage terror on the innocent.

15. It's why they're unable to articulate any vision of "victory."
They act like there are nine terrorists in the world and if we just play a good game of whack-a-mole, we'll create peace.

They act like bombing people's villages and killing their relatives is going to make people NOT fight. Maybe that's because their own response would be to cower -- I mean, we're talking about a bunch of chickenhawks here -- but wouldn't your own reaction be fury?

They act like there's a military solution, and there isn't. But what do they know about the military, or diplomacy, or anything else? These people are utterly incompetent.
