This photo appeared in Vanity Fair (reproduced online at Slate.com) in an article about the Wilsons.

This could be Valerie Plame or it could be a model out of central casting who looks good in a mysterious cloak-and-dagger get up. My guess is the latter.

I think they've been in the background a bit ... but she certainly has been photographed before. They attended social events, church, parties, etc. and people knew that Joe Wilson had a pretty blond wife named Valerie. The secret is that she worked undercover for the CIA.

Publishing her picture is no big deal anymore -- her undercover status is blown forever.

they first started talking about Rove's implication in the whole mess. I was taken aback because I had understood that her anonymity was meant to be protective of not only her, but of possible associates. It was on all the corporate media...I switched channels to check because I was disconcerted.

what about the multiple grand jury investigations into Clinton? A grand jury will convene basically whenever there is enough pressure on the government to have one. I don't want to sound like I'm defending Bush (I'm trying not too!) but these things go on all the time and they don't actually imply guilt or law breaking just because they've been convened.

2 years ago when this whole leak went down. It was the CIA that originally had to inform the FBI that in fact an operative had been outed. It was after a lengthy investigation within the CIA that the FBI was then asked by the CIA to investigate. At that point Ashcroft recused himself. Subsequent to that the #2 at the FBI appointed Fitzgerald. That is how I remember it going down. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

They were a pretty outgoing couple anyways so after the name was leaked, it was well known who she was. Showing the photo really doesn't make a big difference at this point.

Even if it's not illegal, a compromised state secret should not be publicized in this form, though it's probably difficult to specify what sort of things should and should not be disseminated after already having been leaked.

I would consider it approximately equal to widely disseminating identifying images of a crime victim.
