Maybe a better questions is, "Why did they do it?" Why did they go on the attack to smear through character assassination? This could have been easily dismissed in the beginning with a, "Mr. Wilson is incorrect about his Niger claims. That was not the country in Africa which British intelligence cited." There. Done.
