On the Today Show, Wilson says Bush Should Fire Rove
14 July 2005

In an exclusive interview on the Today Show, Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson called on President Bush on today to Karl Rove. Wilson said that Bush’s top-level aide engaged in an “abuse of power” by discussing his wife’s job with a reporter.

Wilson decried what he called a White House “stonewall” in the wake of revelations that Rove, a longtime Bush confidant, was involved in the leak to the news media that Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA officer.

Wilson, in an interview broadcast Thursday on NBC’s “Today” show, said he thinks the White House’s posture in this controvery represents a continuing “cover-up of the web of lies that underpin the justification for going to war in Iraq.”

Wilson was asked about statements by Rove’s defenders noting that an e-mail describing Rove’s conversation with Time reporter Matthew Cooper indicated that Rove did not specifically mention Valerie Plame by name.

“My wife’s name is Mrs. Joseph Wilson,” he replied. “It is Mrs. Valerie Wilson. He named her. He identified her,” Wilson said. “So that argument doesn’t stand the smell test ... What I do know is that Mr. Rove is talking to the press and he is saying things like my wife is fair game. That’s an outrage. That’s an abuse of power.”

2. I love a righteous person who knows how to fight and not back down
when he's right! That's what I was looking for when I worked my butt off for Kerry and what a dissappointment! Galloway and Wilson are my kinda guys! They are so inspiring!

6. Yeah, now he sticks his nose in to look like a leader...
where was he when all of us were working our butts off to get him elected and he folded before I could get home from Cleveland? Sitting on a pile of money that many of us coughed up even though it was more than we could afford! Conyers and Boxer and the BCC kept fighting for our votes to be counted but Kerry couldn't be bothered. I'll not be bothered to put out for him again!

7. Kerry was fighting too
Boxer had requested that Kerry not be in the Senate when they challenged the vote. Otherwise it would have looked like sour grapes rather than a campaign for election reform.

We need to keep this as a matter of general principles so that even people who voted for Bush over Kerry could go along.

9. Sorry doc, I don't see him as having shown the kind of
leadership qualities I'm looking for. How could it have been any worse for us or the rest of the world if he seemed to be showing "sour grapes"? The facts were there to be uncovered by people who cared and were willing to do the work. They've done it and it's clear to those of us who followed it! Kerry wasn't one of those who fought to have it brought out. He was too busy worrying about looking presidential for next time.

10. That's just your take
Kerry was working on this post election. Kerry has spoken out against voter suppression, despite attacks from the conservative media for this.

It would have been worse if Kerry was there because people would then see the entire campaign for election reform as being a Kerry vs. Bush issue, and we would not get the support of Bush voters. That's why even Boxer thought he should stay away. This way we can appeal based upon general principles of fair elections, and there is hope that moderates who voted for Bush will go along.

12. That's right, it is my take and I'll stand by it.
We got no backing or support from any of the Bush voters anyway. It's only now that the swing voters are waking up to the reality. Up until now, the dems just looked weak and incapable of standing up for anything! DLC all over again, til Dean spoke out. That just supported all the spin coming out of the right wing MSM.

13. You're entitled to your opinion
but you might think about how buying these Rovian talking points just helps the Republicans.

It's the same thing after every election as Democrats buy the opposing talking points and attack the losing candidate. Republicans know better, as they allowed Nixon to return, and keep people like Dole around as elder leaders without ganging up on them.

17. I certainly don't aspire to emulate the sheeple Republicans!
I will continue to oppose those, in any party, who's behavior doesn't live up to the goals of a true democracy. I put out BIG bucks, time and effort for this candidate and can recognize DLC, inside the Beltway, cut-my-own-losses,BS as usual, political behavior for myself without buying any of the neocons arguments. My support and effort from now on will go to:

1)candidates challenging rotten incumbant--anywhere (ie whoever runs against Delay), and

2)grassroots organizations whose values I embrace (EMILY's list, ACT, MOVEON, PFAW, etc.

If I have to goose-step in line with the party bosses in order to live up to your ideals, I'm happy to let your parade go by, thank you very much.

16. I would challenge you to compare Dean's DLC credentials with Kerry's and
see who GOVERNED as a centrist for 11 years and who accrued the most liberal lifetime voting record of all the primary candidates with the rating closest to Wellstone's.

The media hype on both candidates was never accurate.

18. I agree with you. I've followed this info. I'm just very
angry with Kerry's behavior after the OH debacle, which I worked hard to avoid and saw first hand. I've since discussed the issue of state and national political organizing in the Democratic party with a couple of my state officials and have become aware of some of the dangerous differences between how the two parties cooperate and function. Too many dems. function like isolated heads of their own little fiefdoms and do not stick their necks out to assist others in their party--they don't function like members of a real political party. I believe this has worked to the detriment of the dems and that it played into what so many of us suffered during the 2004 robbery.

19. Unfortunately the responsibility to deal with the machines BEFORE the
election was Terry MacAuliffe's. I don't think he ever took the threat of rampant machine rigging seriously. There was no way to prove the fraud afterwards. The moment Kerry said he's gonna fight it out, all evidence would have been destroyed. They had a better chance of picking up evidence if there was no compelling need for the Repubs to destroy the evidence.

Now it is Dean's responsibility. I encourage him weekly to expose the machines and those who control them.

22. Unless you worked in Kerry's office
You have no friggin clue what his people did to ivestigate this.

Functioning like members of a real political party means supporting our elected officials in my opinion. Furthermore it means not attacking those who ARE ACTUALLY working to make a difference.

Kerry was on this Plame thing 2 years ago when it first happened, FYI.

He's been more visible than any Dem Senator in the past few months on ALL the issues.

So take your whine somewhere else.

Attitudes like that are the reasons Dems will continue to lose elections no matter who is the candidate. I agree, stop trashing good dems like Kerry who are trying to make a difference.

15. that comment stuck out for me too and I agree because it
goes to motivation, hence Rove's comments to the reporters were anything but in passing or innocent.

11. "Washington is Karl Rove's world and we just live in it."
? Well Dana Milbank might think so, but if Rove works in our government then he works for ME. And I want someone who represents ME to make that clear to him.

I don't remember the attribution but:

"For Bush to fire Rove would be like Charlie McCarthy firing Edger Bergen"...

That about covers it...
