In a turn of events worthy of a Shakespearean tragedy, Karl Rove is falling from the dizzying heights of untouchable omnipotence to the sordid depths of political scapegoat. Long regarded as Bush’s political Svengali, Rove now finds himself in the cross-hairs of a legal and political manhunt for the White House official responsible for revealing the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

Having staunchly defended Rove in the past against his alleged involvement in the outing of Plame, the White House now finds itself in the untenable position of withholding comment in deference to the ongoing criminal investigation. No one, not even the press, is buying the White House’s current policy of silence on Rove’s involvement in the Plame affair. The skepticism arises out of the fact that, while the investigation was ongoing, the White House on repeated occasions summarily dismissed any question of Rove’s involvement as “totally ridiculous.”

The White House’s abrupt switch from dismissive boasting to contrite silence speaks volumes. Like corporate executives or major league baseball players who take the Fifth rather than testify before Congress about their malfeasance or steroid use, the White House’s sudden resort to “no comment” amounts to a silent admission of wrongdoing. If someone didn’t have the goods on Rove, you can rest assured that the White House would still be arrogantly brushing aside any and all questions about Rove’s role in outing Plame.

For Rove, the jig is up, and the White House knows it.

The WH is 'taking the 5th' cuz they haven't decided which puppet master has his strings cut. unca dick has a bad ticker and is lookin' worse everytime he emerges from his hidie hole + plus he has all the blueprints of the neocon construction of the fascist takeover. saurove has all the secrets; knows where all the skeletons R hidden.

4. It is not just for criticizing.

The Wilson story leads back to the forged documents. And that was done by a group in Italy that has ties to Rove. And the purpose of forging the documents is to build the lie that Iraq had WMD so we could go to war. Wilson's info could have lead to exposing the whole plan if the issue had not been diverted.
