The right-wing's new enemy: Time's Matt Cooper.
Making the transition from Wilson to Cooper

Posted By Carpetbagger On 14th July 2005 @ 11:30

This week, we've learned the greatest enemy the Republicans can think of is Joseph Wilson. The GOP talking points issued earlier this week included six principal arguments, literally all of which sought to undermine Wilson's credibility.

Now, however, it seems the right-wing machine is shifting gears towards a new enemy: Time's Matt Cooper.

From a conservative perspective, this is at least coherent. Cooper's email identifying Rove as someone who leaked classified information made this lingering, two-year-old controversy a front-page scandal. For that matter, Cooper's two-hour grand-jury testimony yesterday was poised to make Rove look pretty bad. With this in mind, Cooper must be ruined, according to the GOP mindset, or people will believe him. They can't have that.

The transition from Wilson to Cooper has been subtle but steady the past few days.

1. Cooper's crime, like Wilson's, is letting the truth out.
Truth makes Bushies look bad, and they can't forgive those who espouse it. Pure and simple.

2. Interesting.
It wasn't until Miller went to jail that the MSM seemed to have any interest in this story.

Cooper is a weasel.

But Miller is that one that got the attention focused on the real story.

Seems like that would make Miller and not Cooper the target of repub hate.

4. I hope they try to go after Cooper hard...
The MSM is obviously into protecting their own, otherwise this wouldn't even be a scandal right now...If Cooper is picked on, I would think this would help spur on the MSM to keep this on the front burner...

5. It seems clear that Miller's source is different than Cooper's
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 12:10 PM by DearAbby
why then would she be in jail for not revealing her source? Could it be that Novak claiming there were TWO WHITEHOUSE SOURCES...that she is hiding the other...and could the other source be Cheney?

Maybe it is time to start asking this question publically...Who is Miller hiding?

11. Perhaps not who but what is she hiding? Was she an active participant in
spreading the Plame story? Apparently she was on the horn with someone (and Fitzgerald already knows who) in the Administration on or about the date Wilson's op ed appeared in the times. (July 6 was it?) Was she laundering the info and/or was she also a "source" rather than a recipient?

Fitzgerald already knows who Miller talked to. So she's not shielding the identity of her contact. Reportedly the person signed a waiver of confidentiality as Administration officials were required to do and, according to a report I read citing Fitzgerald, came forward on his/her own. Since Miller never wrote a word on the Plame story, obviously her name came up in the investigation via interviews with investigators and/or testimony with the grand jury. Interesting, no?

E&P article speculates: http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/columns/shoptalk_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000977538

6. I agree. Unless word comes down from the CEOs, the reporters will
be on this like a puppy on a penny loafer.

where Sam was a gumshoe. The whole show was full of that kinda schtick, and I guess it rubbed off on me. *g*

7. I call it "The Big Giant Head"
You can tell from the first time that you hear a name mentioned on Hannity. Then Rush goes after the same person the next day.
Then the rhetoric heats up and pretty soon O'Reilly is screaming about this latest 'traitor' (he's usually the last to jump on the bandwagon).

Then come the personal attacks. They did something apparently disgusting or disturbing when they in High School. They donated to a Democratic candidate (gasp! horrors!). They'll jump on anything they find, whether true or not and magnify it way out of proportion or even logical possibility.

Then finally, the calls for apology/resignation/legal action.

When you think about it, it's just like the stages of grief when a loved one dies.

The Big Giant Head is now slowly swiveling and focussing its merciless eyes on Matt Cooper.

May God have mercy on his soul.

10. Rove Gave HimThe Go-Ahead
Which is kind of like Rove slipping Dan Rather some evidence about Bush's military service. Not really - I just wanted to say that Rove is a scumbag with virtually nothing beyond suspicion.

12. They know that Matt Cooper's testimony will sink Rove ....sooooo
Cooper becomes the enemy. He'll take the stand with direct evidence against KKKarl.

Also, Cooper is married to Mandy Grunwald, who ran the Clinton media operation in the 1992 campaign -- and she's Henry Grunwald's daughter -- more than enough to make Cooper their smear target.

Hell, they're finished and they have to do something besides just sit around and wait for the indictments! They are being pro-active, and pro-active to Rove & Co. is smear, lie, deceive, smear, lie, deceive, smear, lie, deceive.

At this point -- BY THEIR FRUITS WE SHALL KNOW THEM. Any reporter or commentator repeating the Rove Talking Points will be openly exposed.
