NY Times = Suckers

(posted July 15 2 AM ET)

The news today should be about how a Bush Administration leak of the name of an Al Qaeda member turned double agent in Aug. 2004, hurt a British counterterror operation, allowing suspected terrorists to escape -- including possibly the eventual London Bombers.

As the leak was part of justifying a politically timed terror alert, right after the Dem Convention, this would be a second example of the Bush Administration misusing classified information for political purposes, harming our national security.

But more likely, the punditocracy will ignore the pattern that’s emerging, and flock to today’s NY Times report, claiming that Karl Rove didn’t leak Plame’s name to Bob Novak, but Novak told it to Rove.

It is stupefying that the NY Times would print this story.

1. What I don't get about this Rove - Novak thing
Is, if the judge new this, supposedly in October, why is Novak still untouchable. If Judith Miller is in jail for not revealing her sources, shouldn't he be put under the same scrutiny. More so then ever, if he is the one who told Karl Rove (not that I necessarily beleive that).

That points to an even more egregarious outing by someone who continues to remain hidden.

Also, why is Judith Miller still protecting her source now that Karl Rove was outed? Is her source someone other then Karl Rove? If so, who is it?

4. Speculation is that Novak already testified, but Fitzgerald investigating
series of calls made between Novak and the White House immediately following the referral of CIA request to the Justice Department for an investigation of the outing of Valerie Plame.

6. What I Don't Get Is The Whole Thing...
I mean, just offhand, it seems fairly unlikely that either you or I could hand out the names of covert officers working deep cover operations against weapons proliferation, to such close-mouthed, sensitive, careful individuals as Robert the HUGE Mouth Novak, and get away with it.

Nor does it seem awfully likely that you or I would be afforded at least a year's prior notification of our impending indictment and subsequent arrest by the FBI.

On the contrary, real life training of special tactical squad officers, scheduled for our very own residences, at odd hours of the extreme early morning, and without prior announcement seems far more likely.

Given all of which, why is Rove not in slam, right now, as would be either you or I?

8. Welcome to DU, and a brief respite from Bushworld.
I understand your confusion completely, we all do.

If we don't have answers here, at least we offer therapy. If it all gets too much, head for the Lounge.

In the meantime, :toast: to a new DUer!

9. Good questions you ask, Alien8ed. Let's hope Fitzgerald does his job.
Wilson seems to have confidence in Fitgerald.

Welcome to DU!

11. Thanks for the Welcomes!
...But I still want to know if there's something intimate, and therefore no doubt genuinely, horrifyingly repulsive, between Karl and... who? Barbara? Dear God, what a vile image.

But, moving right along, there's a reason that Karl keeps reappearing like Imhotep The Mummy.

And thus that question remains: Why?

2. Totally fits with our corporate lapdog media, though.
Dammit, this is far worse than anything they accused Clinton of, and here's the "liberal" media doing everything it can to muddle the issue and brush it off.

Rove Confirmed Plame Indirectly, Lawyer Says
Bush Aide Said Columnist Told Him Name
By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 15, 2005; A01

White House senior adviser Karl Rove indirectly confirmed the CIA affiliation of an administration critic's wife for Robert D. Novak the week before the columnist named her and revealed her position, a lawyer involved in the case said last night.

The operative, Valerie Plame, is the wife of Joseph C. Wilson IV, a former ambassador who had publicly disputed the White House's contention that Saddam Hussein had sought to buy uranium from Niger for possible use in a nuclear weapon.

The lawyer, who has knowledge of the conversations between Rove and prosecutors, said President Bush's deputy chief of staff has told investigators that he first learned about the operative from a journalist and that he later learned her name from Novak.

Rove has said he does not recall who the journalist was who first told him that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA, or when the conversation occurred, the lawyer said.

5. Read this, too. Interesting Post reveals this while NYT does not.
The only Rove attorney mentioned in news accounts so far is Luskin. Are there others?

10. Bush's political maneuverings resulted in the London bombings
I wonder how Tony feels about his old buddy George now? Let's see, Bush hung him and the rest of the G8 leaders out to dry by refusing even to acknowledge that global climate change exists; by playing political games with national security last year, he tipped off Al Qaeda that the Brits had inside information on them; many Al Qaeda operatives skedaddled once they knew they were found out, and the Brits had to hustle to arrest the ones they could get; the Brits thought they had at least derailed Al Qaeda, despite the Bush administration's bungling, but they were wrong as we all found out last week.

Stand by your doofus, Tony.
