Fuck! Rove's gonna walk.
The latest memo http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/16/AR2005071600087.html is going to get him off the hook. They are going to be blame all of this on a loose memo. Rove has already testified he knows nothing about the memo (yeah, right) so here's his defense: Someone allowed a sensitive memo out which spurred media speculation. And that he only "heard" that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA, he didn't start that rumor. This is why he gave Cooper permission to testify, he knows he's off the hook. The focus will go back to this memo and off him

So, be prepared for MSM hype about the memo & Powell for a while, while Karl circles the wagons. That slimy fucker is going to get away with it. Again.

Maybe I've had a long week, but I don't see this ending well. Unless Fitzgerald can find the author of the memo, or the person(s) who leaked it (unlikely), I fear this whole charade will end in a stalemate. It's been great seeing Karl on the grill, and the damage to the WH is palpable, but I see this ending like Iran/Contra. Business as usual.

1. Doesnt matter if he STARTED the rumor. CONFIRMING is the same crime.
Don't go believing everything you read in the papers.

6. I dunno,
I was talking to a fairly level headed lawyer (and Democrat) that felt there was enough wiggle room for KKKarl to walk. I hope he's wrong.

11. Oh, there's definately a lot of wiggle room
What is more important than the frog-march, though, is exposing this Administration and sapping all of their political capital.

36. I agree with atre
I want them all to go down over this. They're bleeding. Will they bleed faster and more fatally with Karl on the job or off the job?

He's a stain on the WH now and that works for us better than if he were replaced by some shiny new penny.

2. Calm down. Take a deep breath.
Wait for the results of the grand jury investigation.
Press reports will not determine the outcome of this.

12. Thats the cool part of this
That he's bringing them down. In a way I hope it drags on into the 2006 election cycle so he's muzzled and the Repubs are even more hindered.

It's just damn frustrating.

rational decisions together about what to do to mitigate and even prevent sometimes what is headed our direction.

I see them orchestrating a perfect rescue effort for this guy that will "MOW THEM DOWN" if they dare turn tail on him.

It's amazing. THese local schmokels can advance to great halls of power....it shows me HOW important the all politics is local maxim is.

We must realize how important each and every contest is from municipal selections to state legislatures.

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0507/S00227.htm

During questioning by the FBI about his role in the Plame affair, Rove told federal agents that he only started sharing information about Plame with reporters and White House officials for the first time after conservative columnist Robert Novak identified her covert CIA status in his column on July 14, 2003.

But Rove wasn’t truthful with the FBI, what with the recent disclosure of Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper’s emails, which reveal Rove as the source for Cooper’s own July 2003 story identifying Plame as a CIA operative, and show that Rove spoke to Cooper nearly a week before Novak’s column was published and, according to previously published news reports, spoke to a half-dozen other reporters about Plame as early as June 2003.

Plus, Novak said he "didn't dig it up"; that it was "given to him", which directly contradicts Karl's story.

8. Oh no, This is much bigger than I ever suspected.
Read tonight's post by Donalin. The NYT did a story. Then read the DailyKos link.

The Plame outing is the tip of the iceberg.

No, the bigger story is the Bush administration's attempt to deceive the American people into war. AND the cover up that followed.

I never saw it before. But THIS very well could be what the Justices have seen which shifted the case.

14. George Tenet is the KEY. Reading the timeline shows they KNEW about Niger
They knew about Niger. Tenet told them over and over again. They told the speechwriters. Tenet told Hadley. Wilson sent messages to Rice about Niger. She ignored him.

And as SOON as the Bush admin saw that first mention of the ambassador who was sent to Niger and found nothing, what did they do? They did a work-up on Wilson.

They had NO interest in the truth. No, they actively worked to bury it. It's impossible to not see it.

Now I think Tenet brought up the Plame case just so he could spill the whole story.

20. Seems to me this is yet another case of the coverup being
worse than the initial crime. When will the pols and hacks,
plotters and conspirators of the world learn that it's never
the "big booboo" or baddest decision made but the
covering up of same with stacks of lies and misdirections that
launches the boat down the river to exposure and oblivion?

If the Feds could go after even Martha Stewart for her fairly
minimal "coverup" of her "crime," then
there's all the more hope they will see it is essential that
they pursue and eventually convict the Karlrovian team. I'm
having trouble seeing how there is any way around this
eventuality, frankly.

18. The spin of the Bush Regime and their RW Media is an
attempt at damage control of the public. They are throwing everything they can at this to confuse and deflect but many Amerikans although not up to speed on the complexities are smelling something foul in the air. Many are losing trust in the RW and that will be the plus for all of us vehemently oppossed to the RW, esp., the NeoCons and Fundie wings of that turd stacked Ultra-Capitalist steamroller.

19. Take a look at these threads, and feel better....
At an absolute minimum, assuming all of Fitzgerald's investigations come to naught and no indictments are produced for the more "salacious" crimes that we've been speculating on, we still have these threads. Read them and feel better. They may sound pretty trivial, but they're not, and the government takes these things VERY seriously.

I think Karl's only possible escape route is a presidential pardon, and that would generate a sh!tstorm that would dwarf what's happening right now. Maybe he could work an immunity deal with Fitzgerald, but only if he could produce some one higher up the food chain.

is one other possible outcome I haven't seen mentioned here.

22. I respectfully disagree
I could be wrong, but I don't think these are matters that are under the purvue of the Grand Jury. Rove may indeed by a master debater (sorry, couldn't resist :) ), but the government wouldn't need to seek indictments to prosecute him under the relevant laws. Again, just my opinion, but it looks like it would be a slam dunk case to me (unless Rove gets pardoned, of course).

24. Ques: When I was canvassing for Kerry last fall,
I talked to a guy living in the heart of the Middle Class in Independence Mo, a Military-related guy, probably holding somekind of connection to all of those contracts on the Ks and Mo job boards for contracts at Frt. Leavenworth, but I digress.

He was voting Bush, when I asked why, he said something about the quality of Intelligence. I wonder what that guy is thinking and doing now.

A related point - I recall during the build-up to Bush's War that there was discussion about Cheney having his own private intelligence, which he was talking from to the public. So what else do we know about that?

34. Which is the reason why the calls for firing Rove on the basis that what
he did is WRONG (whether it is unlawful or not) are important and those who dismiss them are falling in the RW trap.

They know the standard to meet for Rove to be found guilty is very high and all they hope is that we do not call them on what is RIGHT and WRONG, but on what is lawful or not.
