Harry Reid sounds like he knows what he's doing
snip>
If Reid is worried about the possibility of Armageddon over the Supreme Court vacancy, it doesn't show. "I really believe the president is gonna try to get somebody who is not a lot of trouble," Reid says. "He's got enough going on."

Reid told White House officials that they should deal directly with Patrick Leahy, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee -- and a senator whose estimation in the eyes of the Bush administration was distilled last year when Vice President Cheney urged him to perform an impossible act on himself.

"He's stuck with Leahy, you see," Reid says, speaking of Bush. "Leahy is a pleasant man. I think it will work out fine." He smiles, reciting his lines.

Harry's quite a character. This is a good piece for him.

1. Agreed. Insightful.
Political jujitsu when well done is practically effortless and accompanied by much smiling, as Reid does here.

2. Connected to this
I heard a speech John Gibbons give about two months ago, (former chief Judge of the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals and the lead plaintiff's attorney in the Rasul case in which the Supreme Court said the Gitmo detainees had the right to counsel). He was asked about Rehnquist's retiring (since that was the question at the time) and he did not seem particularly worried about the outcome if it happened.
Gibbons is no friend of the Bush admnistration, he had some very harsh things to say about them.

3. Interesting
I think Reid is doing a very good job as leader. I didn't like his vote with the bankruptcy bill but everything else I think he's been pretty good.
