Don't they realize that they can save themselves and their party if they exorcise Rove? How can the WSJ write editorials that say this investigation is about CIA nepotism? How can Ken Mehlman say that Rove is a victim of a partisan smear? How can John Gipson openly applaud the outing of Plame? How can sane people listen to this cacaphony of madness? The only answer is that its not about Rove - it's all got to be about something a lot deeper and graver than a political misjudement on the part of Rove and Libby. I also think Rove must have made it clear to everyone that if he goes they all go.

4. They are pursuing an All-Or-Nothing strategy

By closing ranks and circling the wagons, now trashing Joseph Wilson and dismissing the blown cover of a CIA Agent as a trifling matter, they are taking a very big gamble. If Fitzgerald's investigation leads to any indictments against major individuals in the Bush Administration, there are going to be a lot of cockroaches scrambling for their hidey-holes. Bush will be toast and so will the GOP leadership. You would almost wonder if they have a mole on Fitzgerald's legal team.

So many of them have already gone on record minimizing or dismissing charges against him that they're covered in mud if he has to go down. Therefore, they'll stick by him--albeit quietly--until this hopefully blows over.

It's the bad side of masculinity that typifies Republicanism: the inability to admit a mistake and the unwillingness to uncover the forces of money and privilege that sustain them.
