Bush and his defenders are now silent. That silence, they hope, will make this all go away. The silence, they also hope, will dictate an end to the story in the media. It will probably end with a well timed Karl Rove resignation followed by a presidential pardon. And while that might seem to be a victory for Democrats, it is in fact another victory for Rove. It is because he has once more diverted attention away from the real issue, the one we should have been focused on all along. That is Bush's exploitation of his phony war on terror.
As long as we have Rove or Downing Street memos to talk about, we continue to play into Big Brother's hands. We stand in awe of all the big trees and fail to see the forest. Osama was replaced by Saddam and it was Iraq, not Saudi Arabia, that was behind September 11th. Day is night, black is white, and we are upside down inside the rabbit hole.
One half of this nation refuses to believe Bush lied to us about the war, while another thirty percent doesn't want to believe it. Only the real hard core, the remaining twenty percent, the ones I called "true believers", know the real truth. However, they know it and they are blinded by it. They can't see anything else but the truth.
They don't understand what this case is really all about. It isn't about Joe Wilson or his wife, Valerie. It isn't even about national security. Rove is a smoke screen that could be a piece of the real puzzle, but probably won't, only because the focus is being misdirected one more time. Where is Dick Cheney in all of this? Where has he been lately? Is he off at that undisclosed location hoping the spotlight doesn't fall on him? Has Bush asked him to lie low? Is it because he is also as culpable as Rove in all of this?
