Lundgren (R-CA) on C-SPAN re: extending library clause of Patriot
Act to 10 years. Bases his proposal on the fact that the Justice Department has told Congress that there have been no violations of the statute to date. Do you believe that? I don't. I don't believe anything this government says. You know that this will be the rationale used by Dems who end up supporting this monstrosity.

1. support of the patriot act has been the biggest disappointment
...I never thought my own party would lose its collective mind and support the storm troopers. If the majority of the country read books this law would never wash.

3. Slippery Slope time
Wait until the fad de jour is to go into every library in America, get all the books that "insight terra," and force citizens to burn them in the parking lot. Fallwell said that immorality, like homosexuality, caused God to punish the U.S. So, for instance, any book containing a homosexual in a positive light would support "terra" would be burned. Once upon a time, 12 or 13 years ago, I would have scoffed at the idea that something like the Patriot Act would exist. Now look.

4. Libraries are fighting back
My library system only keeps patron records while the materials are on loan. The day the materials are returned, the record is deleted.

Legal. And the feds can't subpoena something that doesn't exist.
