Congressman Threatens Islamic Holy Sites
So much for : it is not about Islam.

I am sure this is a great gesture of outreach in Tancredo's mind.

Congressman Threatens Islamic Holy Sites

Mon Jul 18, 8:25 AM ET

DENVER - A Colorado congressman told a radio show host that the U.S. could "take out" Islamic holy sites if Muslim fundamentalist terrorists attacked the country with nuclear weapons.
...

Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.

"Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.

"You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.

"Yeah," Tancredo responded.

...
Mohammad Noorzai, coordinator of the Colorado Muslim Council and a native of
Afghanistan, said Tancredo's remarks were radical and unrepresentative but that people in Tancredo's position need to watch their words when it comes to sacred religious sites and texts.

1. Great minds think alike...

Take a look at the replies. If you are expecting outrage, you will be shocked. Maybe it's just that we Massachusetts-ites are such peacniks?

I dunno.

9. You didn't miss anything...
your reaction and those of the posters here are more in line with what I thought.

I am often left wondering these days: Where is the outrage?

8. Uh, if 3 or 4 of our cities are simultaneously hit
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 12:57 PM by TomPainesBones
with already planted nukes, THAT would technically be the start of WWIII.
Bottom line, if that happens all bets are off.
It's over, for us all. WWIII would be a given.

On Edit: But by this assholes logic we should bomb the GOP for Tim McVeigh.

15. Well sure,
but the point is that he made a highly inflammatory threat based on a very big "IF." Our efforts would be better spent securing loose nuclear material, dealing with underlying causes of terrorism, securing chemical plants, etc., and toning down the war mongering rhetoric.

17. Ideally, yes.
But I don't think it's a matter of being "a very big if" but more "a definite when".
I've believed for years that it's already too late.

18. All the more reason to do the things I mentioned,
(plus a whole lot more) to make sure that this doesn't occur, and more importantly, that there's little incentive for it to ever happen.

That's all I have to say on this topic.

20. I wish I shared your optimism
Bush has supplied all the incentive necessary for generations.
Even removal from office in complete disgrace won't stop this wound from flowing now.
I'd love to be wrong (I live in Manhattan), but I know I'm not.

19. Heh, I think this guy
is trying to make sure the Bible's "prophecies" come true by inciting massive Jihad in the Middle East...scary. I thought the Chinese guy saying they would nuke the US was bad, but this is no better. Sigh, our government crucifies the moral high ground everytime.

but I will post it here, too. I called his offices and got the "he was talking hypothetically" bullshit from two different people, so it must be their "talking point".

12. The Islamic community needs to know the consequences.
If they think they can look the other way while terrorists in their community acquire NUCLEAR WEAPONS which, let us say, are used to wipe out *every* *human* *being* in BOSTON, NYC, and PHILADELPHIA, losing one or two of their holy sites is quite a small price to pay, in my opinion.

If we are nuked, our response should be similar to what Rome did to Carthage.

to happen, by having the right policies and the right bills, rather than throwing a few inflammatory statements on a talk show radio without thinking to the consequences.

Bombing the holy sites after a nuclear attack is not a way to protect us. It is an action after the fact. I would ask to this congressman why his party refuses to spend the necessary money to improve the security of our ports and railways.

16. America will not roll over after a nuclear attack.
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 01:11 PM by JHBowden
While I'm committed to the Democrats on a lot of policy issues, I simply can't stand this foreign policy stuff that is shouted by the base from time to time. What you're saying is like someone in the 1960s saying, "if the Communists in Russia nuke New York and Boston, don't retaliate by hitting the most important targets in Russia. It might make the Chinese and the Cubans mad."

Leaders like Eisenhower, Kennedy, and so forth made it clear that not only would we respond in the event of a nuclear attack, our response would be massive.

21. Right, but how is mecca
strategically important to anyone anyway, it will only enrage and create more fundamentalist terrorists. You can bet, however, that we won't give a fuck what tribal area Osama or anyone else responsible is hiding in, rightfully so. The day they nuke us indeed the start of Wordl War III, whether or not the moderate Muslims in the world support our response depends on just that-our response.

22. So we should sit back and let ourselves be nuked over and over again?
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 01:33 PM by JHBowden
Any response will anger the Muslim community. After a nuclear attack, we will do what we want, period. Any people who have their feelings hurt can sit down and shut up or meet their maker also.

The time for moderate Muslims to act is now, not after an attack.

25. Just to see where you're going with this
do you also favor internment camps for Muslims living here in the US?

Also, I find it interesting that you use terrorist attacks taken place during the previous administration as an example of our "non response". I've seen those talking points before from the RWers after 9/11 when they tried pinning it on Clinton.

And inciting those who have no regard for human life (on both sides...) is not the way to start!

As John Lennon said... Give peace a chance!

Tancredo for president? Little-known Colo. Republican hits Iowa
By M.E. SPRENGELMEYER
Scripps Howard News Service
July 15, 2005

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After his first long day stumping across Iowa last week, a weary Tom Tancredo dragged himself up to a hotel room in Cedar Rapids, zipped open the suitcase and started looking for his pajamas.

"This doesn't look like my wife's packing!" he exclaimed. Inside, he found a bag of dirty laundry and other stuff belonging to some poor guy who was making a connecting flight for Hawaii. The congressman had grabbed the wrong bag when their puddle-jumper landed in Moline, Ill.

Uh-oh.

>snip<

Tancredo has visited New Hampshire and now Iowa, testing the waters for a possible presidential run. But the real goal is to turn his pet issue - a hard line on illegal immigration - into something none of the contenders can ignore.
