Karl Rove is a one-trick pony

All he can do is attack his enemy's strengths and rely on the aghast moment of incredulity of his opponents to push his hate home. Finesse, besides being a French word, is an alien concept.

Frantic attempts to demand retractions and apologies from Wilson are met with stony silence, and Segretti's little toady is caught: nobody ever resisted before.

The functionaries and mouthpieces are still flailing away, but you can sense a reluctance as they look over their shoulders.

With any luck, this will drag on for awhile. We need to see the complicity of the press and the calumny of the feudalists.

People have always caved to this man, but the achaeopteryxes are coming home to roost.

What's truly enjoyable about this spectacle is that there's something else roiling under this: the implication of Cheney. He's roundly despised by many within the Republican Party, but he's so feared that nary a discouraging word is ever heard. Remember how Deadeye Dick led his "search" for a VP in '00? He had every possible contender tell him every last bit of dirt that could be used against them, then, armed with this extortion, he declared himself the only viable one. Every one of those functionaries hates him, and many others do too. His strong-arming within the party has rankled many, and it only takes one or two to cut him loose.

Remember: Republicans finally took Nixon down.

1. But today's Republicans make yesterday's look like Eugene Debs!

Still, you're right about the "long knives" waiting to come out, I think -- their species is like that. Overall, a fine analysis, PoE, plus use of an underappreciated word like "calumny," to boot!

2. speaking of long knives
This whole affair bears a striking resemblance to the original Night of the Long Knives. Scared even more now.
