Ahem...in a highly amusing anecdote told by Mrs. Bush, daughter Jenna is reported to have pronounced Sioux City as "sigh-ox."

10. Yeah, I've heard mostly
'vee-tay'. I think of that pronunciation as purely English-language.

I've heard a bit of 'vee-tie', mostly from people with a different style of pronunciation in their Latin and who treat it like Latin. I think of it as a tip of the hat to classical pronunciation norms, or reflecting a Church Latin norm.

I'm likely to say 'vee-tay' in English, but go for a more purist pronunciation in jest, or around classicists ("wee-tie", no off-glide on the second /k/ in 'curriculum', trill the /r:/).

And 'vita' "life" is a synonym for 'c.v.' 'course of life, life's path': vitae is genitive singular, vita is nominative singular. Can't say 'curriculum vita', but stand-alone 'vita' is fine.

11. I would say it "vee-tie" thanks to highschool Latin
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 02:38 PM by darkism
But to be correct classical Latin it would have to be wee-tie.
