What if it's Fred Thompson?

Bush has him in town to "introduce the nominee around." Maybe he is the nominee himself.

Bush has done this before. Hiring Cheney to head up VP selection in 2000.

2. Naw, I don't think so. Did you watch Fred when he was in the Senate?

It was very obvious that he hated the hard core political hatered and lack of cooperation.

He was in charge of some investigative committee and he was so discouraged by the response of the rest of the Senate, he quit shortly after he disolved it.

I think he likes his role on Law and Order.

POPULARITY. He's going down the tubes and he knows it. Fred Thompson would be popular with all the "Law & Order" folks regardless of his position on Roe v. Wade or affirmative action.

4. Would Chimpy set himself up for criticism by replacing a woman with a man?

Rove/Chimp/Dick have been skilled about appointing their "tokens" to be able to cast Democrats as "racists" who dare to oppose the appointment on any grounds. It wouldn't make sense from that strategery to appoint a southern white boy like Freddy Thompson to replace the first woman justice.

I'm guessing he finds the most repressive female judge on the planet, and if she's not white, even better for propaganda purposes.

Since there is already a woman on the bench, and an African American, I think Bush wanted to go with an Hispanic judge.

He wanted to go with Gonzalez, but that was vetoed by the War For Jesus crowd. He may be biding his time til Rehnquist comes up and then picking Gonzalez to replace Scalia - who is undoubtedly going to get the Chief Justice nod as soon as it's available.

He's known for being nominally pro-choice, like O'Connor, so I don't see him getting the tap. A former senator would be unbeatable (except for Ashcroft). All that senatorial courtesy nonsense. Good old boyism.

And they would need a new DA on Law and Order.
