Any Democrat in Senate who supports Roberts should be defeated
This is a Democratic party issue. Roberts is a disaster not only on choice but on every other issue from the environment to energy to worker safety. He is another Scalia/Thomas. I don't care who the Democrat is--if he, or she votes for this guy--we should run somebody against them in the next primary. No more playing footsie with the GOP.

As for the so-called "moderate" republicans--this guy is an extremist and if RI's Chafee or Maine Senators Snowe and Collins vote for him--they are then showing their true colors and we should put everything there is against them.

The battle has to be framed this way--Bush is a puppet of the extreme radical christian right wing of the Republican party--he proves it over and over again. This is just the latest example.

1. Yup.
I would propose that we put much of our GOP-centric pressure on Republican senators from blue states. Advertising on television stating that a vote for Roberts is a vote for Position X, Position Y, Position Z, etc. Make the issue and the confirmation vote as clear as day to both the senators and their constituents.

4. actually he is worse
this is an activist judge by any standard who wants to destroy civil rights and bring us back to a plantation society

If the democrats do not line up as a block on this we should work to defeat those who vote for this nomination, just as hard as any republican who votes for it

5. EVERY DEMOCRAT should oppose this scumbag...
...and I mean EVERY ONE of them. Whosoever does not, needs to get some nasty letters telling them they are DONE with their job as Senators - period.

YOU'RE FIRED. Had your chance. You blew it. Byeeeeeee!

12. That's fine,
but don't hold the whole party accountable if only 1 or 2 don't play ball. Nor should the 2008 nominee be penalized because just a handful of senate Democrats decided to play go along to get along.

6. Premature. Roberts is not a "movement"conservative. Turley on Olbermann
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 07:50 PM by flpoljunkie
discussing Roberts who Turley says was his leading "blank slate" candidate--time very short on the D.C. court, a short time---appointed in 2003.

Turley said Roberts was the author of a brief to overturn Roe v. Wade in his role as Deputy Solicitor General in 1990--altho this is not how the Washington Post put this argument.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20 ...

"As Deputy Solicitor General in 1990, he argued in favor of a government regulation that banned abortion-related counseling by federally-funded family planning programs. A line in his brief noted the Bush administration's belief that Roe v. Wade should be overruled."
_______

Turley says Roberts is very bright, very talented. The controverys will be whether he was a "good lawyer representing his client" in the Roe v. Wade case mentioned above, or if he is an advocate of overturning Roe. Turley does not think this is enough to sink his nomination.

Olbermann said he got a 14-3 vote coming out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Leon Panette said he was neither left or right.

I would rather our focus be on Karl Rove and the Bush administration misleading this nation to war in Iraq with trumped up stories about Saddam trying to obtain "nukular" WMD in Niger.

8. Here's my gut response
I really don't think it's about Roe v Wade. Bush doesn't give a crap about that-as do any of his ilk-if they get someone knocked up or God forbid it's their precious daughter-there are always doctors for the rich anyway. What I'm saying is they are hypocrites. Of course.

Much worse-what Bush 1, Bush 2, Bush 3 (oh whatever is fucking name is it's the same godddamn thing) all they care about is POWER and MONEY. Fuck the environment. Fuck global warming. Fuck AIDS. Fuck science. Steal elections.

Have someone favorable to them on the supreme court! Of course-they don't need to overturn roe v. Wade they just need someone on their side. I'm sure that's his main quality-he's Bush friendly! He knows what the score is and the score is-keep those in power in power. Always. At any cost. Fuck justice..fuck ideas..fuck the constitution..GOD and this is why stupid people like me says it DOES MATTER WHO YOU VOTE FOR so fuck all the Kerry haters-left and right-this is your legacy isn't it-somebody that has 30 years on the supreme court to fuck up this country.

Chills me to the bone that guy on Countdown-Turley saying they wanted someone as young as possible-of course-stack the court with a fucking ideologue prick that only cares about the same old same old-and history never moves a damn day forward. Power. Greed. Ideology of those that are ruining the planet. Oh happy day.

11. We all expected a rightwinger, but I disagree on Roe.
I think they DO want to turn it back to the states and drum up a nice, loud fight. They thrive when Americans are divided and fighting -- they hide and work beneath the media noise, and it gives them a lever for "energizing their base," as it's called.

If Roe were simply overturned via a powerful USSC majority and widespread public support, the fight would be over and they'd lose the issue in their arsenal of "levers," as I call them. Keeping it brewing in each and every state, and in national media, keeps their leverage working with the so-called "Christian Right."

And with that, they get all their greedy corporatist, fascist goals accomplished.

10. I'm willing to give Ben Nelson a pass, but otherwise I agree with you
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 07:53 PM by bluestateguy
We have 4 fillibuster votes to spare, and Nelson must stand for re-election in 2006 in a state where Bush still has a 60% approval rating (see http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=4e4c877c-bb40-49a3-8e5f-82e6903ce404). Otherwise, there are no other Red state Democrats up for re-election in 2006. None who are vulnerable anyway. Jeff Bingaman and Bill Nelson are up in New Mexico and Florida, but those are not very red states, and polls show them to be in good shape right now anyway. So I'll give Ben Nelson a pass, but for a blue state Democrat like Feinstein or Lieberman to cave in, or for a Democrat who need not worry about re-election until 2010, like Blanche Lincoln, that would be very hard for me to tolerate.

Also, prospective Democratic presidential contenders should be aware that primary voters are wacthing. That means YOU Hillary, Russ, and Evan.
