Ann Coulter Doesn't like Roberts !! (Warning: from Drudge)

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX WEDJULY 20, 2005 18:42:35 ET XXXXX

FIGHT -- FROM THE RIGHT: COULTER SAYS BUSH PICK WRONG

"We don’t know much about John Roberts. Stealth nominees have never turned out to be a pleasant surprise for conservatives. Never. Not ever... Oh, yeah...we know he's argued cases before the supreme court. big deal; so has Larry Flynt's attorney."

So declares conservative columnist Ann Coulter in a new dispatch set for release.

Coulter continues: It means nothing that Roberts wrote briefs arguing for the repeal of Roe v. Wade when he worked for Republican administrations. He was arguing on behalf of his client, the United States of America. Roberts has specifically disassociated himself from those cases, dropping a footnote to a 1994 law review article that said:

“In the interest of full disclosure, the author would like to point out that as Deputy Solicitor General for a portion of the 1992-93 Term, he was involved in many of the cases discussed below. In the interest of even fuller disclosure, he would also like to point out that his views as a commentator on those cases do not necessarily reflect his views as an advocate for his former client, the United States.”

This would have been the legal equivalent, after O.J.'s acquittal, of Johnnie Cochran saying, "hey, I never said the guy was innocent. I was just doing my job."

And it makes no difference that conservatives in the White House are assuring us Roberts can be trusted. We got the exact same assurances from officials working for the last president Bush about David Hackett Souter. I believe their exact words were, "Read our lips; Souter's a reliable conservative."

From the theater of the absurd category, the Republican National Committee’s “talking points” on Roberts provide this little tidbit:

“In the 1995 case of Barry v. Little, Judge Roberts argued—free of charge—before the D.C. Court of Appeals on behalf of a class of the neediest welfare recipients, challenging a termination of benefits under the District’s Public Assistance Act of 1982.”

I'm glad to hear the man has a steady work record, but how did this make it to the top of his resume?

Finally, lets ponder the fact that Roberts has gone through 50 years on this planet without ever saying anything controversial. That’s just unnatural.

If a smart and accomplished person goes this long without expressing an opinion, they'd better be pursuing the Miss America title.

Developing...

5. No, her idea of a secret liberal isn't mine.
But interesting that her view of liberalism is that of some hidden vice.

Anything Ann doesn't like has to have something to be said for it. Even if it's only that Ann doesn't like it.

7. "PLEASE DON'T THROW ME IN THE BRIAR PATCH!!"
Ignore the reichbot kabuki! This is a well-rehearsed ploy: yell in pain and they'll think you're hurting.

How many times did we hear the "pain" from the right in contemplating the "Quisling Capitulation" (i.e. "compromise") in the Senate where seven Senators wearing the "D" uniform surrendered unconditionally to the Reich?

Ann Coulter is a LIAR ... even when pretending Roberts doesn't make her orgasmic.

8. I agree with Ann - I think this judge will 'turn' liberal as she claims
all Republican nominees do...when in fact they are just using Reason to interpret the law. And unfortunately for Ann, the Constitution is quite liberal:)

In a possible scenarios I think that this guy being chosen falls within my range of 'acceptable.'

When a judge isn't BLATANTLY partisan then he's probably a good judge - and Roe is good law and uses good rationale.

I think we are good here.

13. I've only just started looking at his record
but so far I haven't seen anything truly objectionable, and in some cases his opinions are not too far from my own.

On a related matter, I don't think it's sufficient to oppose someone simply because they have a personal opinion that abortion is wrong. I believe abortion is wrong too, and I've voted Democrat for as long as I've been able to vote (except for one vote for McCain in the 2000 Texas primary). The test will be, to what extent is the nominee willing to stetch, distort, or ignore current law in order to bring about his desired result. Based on the opinions I've seen, Roberts is willing to start from first principles and follow where his reasoning leads, and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. If someone is using reason, then his reason can be swayed.

14. Do you know where there is a good archive of the cases he ruled on
while on the D.C. Circuit Court?

It spans about 2 years so it shouldn't be too difficult to absorb.

And yea, I agree with you - I think he's a pretty good pick (considering who's doing the picking).

9. UH OH, I just read on another thread that if the coulter doesn't like
roberts story shows up on drudge right after a "coulter plagiarizes 90's article" comes out that should be a warning that bush*co is after her and wammo, here it is!

Happy happy, joy joy! Let them attack each other for a change!

RE: Coffee mug, I've never noticed until that pic that texas looks like a fist made into the shape of a gun with the "barrel" pointing into the gulf. If you rotated texas one quarter turn to the right it would be "firing" at Mexico - Kinda like a big geographic Lynndie England "salute".

Coulter continues: It means nothing that Roberts wrote briefs arguing for the repeal of Roe v. Wade when he worked for Republican administrations. He was arguing on behalf of his client, the United States of America.

This is dead on! Attorneys are ethically obligated to zealously represent their clients. In the case of government attorneys, that is the government itself. In serving as an advocate, attorneys often make arguments that they may not agree with. Roberts should not be judged because of positions taken in briefs.

If he espoused problematic positions in law review articles, that would be a different story.

This guy should be quickly confirmed, and we should get back to more pressing business.
