Roberts shows how Democratc accomodation is futile and dumb
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 07:51 AM by Armstead
Remember how the Democrats were going to be all "reasonable" and nice and "bi-partisan" after 2000, and allowed so many Bush right wing nominees go through unopposed?

Well, it's come back to haunt them, with the nominatiion of Roberts.

A core line in the GOP spin now is how Roberts had such "bi-partisan" suppoert from Democrats for his earlier confirmation to the bench. Only three Democrats on the Judicial committee voted "No." That proves that even Democrats agreed that Roberts is highly qualified to be on the Supreme Court, according to the GOP line.

See? Democrats tried to be reasonable and cooperative and docile, hoping it would defang the GOP. Instead, the GOP is now using the Democrats docility and passivity and "picking our battles" strategy against our side.

This is a perfect example of how the GOP spin places Democrats in a "damned if you do and damned if you don"t position. When Democrats cooperate, the GOP says it proves that radical conservatives are "mainstream."

Same thing with the Iraq War. The Democrats who openly opposed and challenged the war are now on firm footing to represent the side of that debate which is becoming more and more accepted by the majority of Americans. They can clearly say "We told you so." But those Democrats who went along with Bush have a hard time being honest opponents of it now.

Seems to me it's time for Democrats stop playing into the hands of Republicans and Bush so much. "Picking battles" and "go along to get along" doesn't work. All is does is hand the other side the club they will use to hit you over the head with.

3. This also shows why it was important to fight the nominations to
the federal bench of rightwing wackos from the Federalist Society. The same appeasers that counsel us to wait for the SCOTUS nomination to make a stand are now telling us to fold our tents and go home.

5. The real solution is to take back control of the Senate (and House)
Isn't it? I think people sometimes have to feel the pain associated with their decisions before they realize the mistake(s) they have made. We still have the right to kick out the bums if we don't like what they're doing. This may be the kick in the ass that so many of my lazy Democratic family members need to get off their ass and do something - I'm the only one in my family who even knows what's going on in politics - why is this? My parents brought me to war protests in the late 60's - what happened to them?

6. The 'solution' is not quite that simple...
...because the 'collaborators' have taken over the Democratic party.

After four years of appeasing Bush...I'm now convinced that certain (d)emocrats are working within the party to promote a RWing agenda....or at the very least a corporate agenda.

Lieberman is one of them.

7. Republicans say the same about McCain, Hagel & others

Can you imagine everyone having a "uniform" agenda like some people here on DU would wish? It's just not a realistic approach to the world for me - as much as I hate what people like Lieberman do sometimes, it's inevitable - even just based on cultural differences throughout our country. We would be just like our enemies if we expect uniformity and marching in lock-step - it's not what "free-thinking" liberals are all about!

8. Damn straight, but
if you review New Democrat literature you are left to wonder whether it was poor strategy or deliberate strategy.

In the second possibility, it would seem probable that this particular network of NeoCon thugs wouldn't think twice about spreading their tentacles into the Democratic party. The problem is so few are willing to accept that possibility--like those who are still holding up the illusion about the Iraq war being anything more than a monumental disaster on every front. It is all due to the fact that people couldn't accept the reality--it would be unthinkable to think the US was waging a war and occupation based on government lies.

And Hillary Clinton admonishes others to face reality.
