Washington Note: UN Ambassador Gingrich? Say it ain't so!!
The very insiderish good guy passed this news along at arm's length, but still found it worth posting:
Lastly, a note just came in -- and I don't have that much time to track all of the details down as I'm rushing to catch a flight -- but apparently there is a Senate Foreign Relations Committee this morning involving former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Senator George Mitchell.

Senator Hagel apparently welcomed Newt as "Ambassador Gingrich," following up on a background comment by Senator Biden that Gingrich ought to throw his hat in to be Ambassador to the United Nations.

But the White House remains steadfastly committed to its desire for an "up or down" vote on Bolton.

Whatcha think? Better than Bolton, right? Newt's at least a smart guy who can charm and more or less keep his temper in check. I mean, look out New York ladies, if "Boot Knockin' Newt" is coming to town, but what's the DU's general take on this, other than the default scorn for any nominee that comes out of this White House?

2. Well, he's better than Bolton
the same way that lethal injection's better than the gas chamber.

3. Not as bad as Bolton
But that doesn't take much. Still not someone I'd want to see in the UN Ambassador's job.

6. Can you plausibly come up with a gag-proof name Bush would nominate?
No matter who he nominates will suck, of course, and they're not letting on yet that they're cutting Bolton loose. This is still in the rumor territory. But who might you like to see Bush put in there?

4. Preferable to Bolton...
but that's like saying I'd prefer being beaten with a wooden bat rather than a metal one.

8. Gingrich-Mitchell Report
They were there testifying, not sure I'd make alot out of this. Still, between this and his Hillary health care thing, he clearly wants to get back in the game. So maybe? Yeah, he'd be better than Bolton, but not by much.

11. I dunno. That long quote from Newt sounds like a campaign speech
Gingrich has presidential aspirations, but eventually he'd gotta realize he's going to end up as this year's Gary Hart. Taking this post would get him out of the race with maximum face. Plus he could get some international booty.

9. Newt's just as slimy, and slicker than Bolton...
... so he could probably put a happy face on wrecking the UN, whereas Bolton could only manage a sneer.

But, I wouldn't trust either one of them to watch my dog for five minutes. One would try to fuck it and the other would try to make a meal of it....

10. Hilarious! He's such a long-winded loud-mouth.
Can you imagine how he would grandstand and throw his weight around. He would make the position into a bully pulpit for his outlandish, impractical ideas. What's this world coming to?
