Ok, this guy Roberts is horrible.

He has explicitly stated that he thinks Roe should be overturned, there has only been one vote protecting Roe (O'Connor, who Roberts is replacing).

He has been on the side of corporations and aided them in their exploitation of people and their destruction of the environment.

He upheld the arrest of a teenager for eating a single french fry.

Apparently, his wife is involved in war profiteering in Iraq.

And worst of all, the Christian Right does not object to him. THAT should be our BIG clue that he MUST be defeated at ALL COSTS.

Democrats and independent PACs should be running Roberts attack ads at saturation levels in every state. The ads should ask people to DEMAND that their senators REJECT WITH CONTEMPT this reactionary partisan hack.

If Roberts makes it to the SC, we might as well just throw in the towel. It will not matter if Dems sweep elections in 2006 and 2008 and 2010 and 2012 and...the reactionary SCOTUS will strike down any progressive reforms our Democratic House, Senate, and WH try to enact. We could literally have ALL the seats in the House and Senate, and the WH, and still be neutralized if there is a right-wing reactionary SC.

There should be no higher activist priority than making sure Roberts is rejected.

Yes, this is an in-your-face clue.
However, Ann Coulter has chimed in as opposing him. That is somewhat reassuring.

And, by the way, thanks for the friendly welcome.
My first post here was greeted by an extremely rude response which thankfully the moderator deleted.

4. Not everyone is so paranoid, but if you stick around..
you'll see why some people are so angry. (I assume you were called a freeper or something like that.)

The main basis for these great divisions is that each 'side' truly believes it is looking out for the best interest of the country and can't understand why the other 'side' won't just see it that way.

In this country right now, many more improprieties are taking place than Bush supporters are willing to acknowlege. DU'er have known for years that this administration directly cost us assets in Valerie Plame and Mohammed Naem Noor Khan that were vital to the security of not just ALL Americans... but the whole world. So you can understand the anger some here feel towards those they perceive as being ignorant with regard to their own self-interest.

The only time I've seen someone kicked off of DU is when they make assertions or cast dispersions without facts... or if they are particularly nasty.

I have not seen anyone kicked off for presenting a thoughtful argument even if it was a little heated.

And the best part is; even if you were a 'troll' or a 'freeper' you should stick around and ask serious questions. You're guaranteed to learn something here because these people are generally quite empirical.

If you have heard something that contradicts a general consensus here, ask politely if anyone else might be aware of this information that's out there. If you are polite, the people that disparage you will have their posts deleted, and the empirical and reasonable people (the vast majority here) will sincerely address the question, illustrate it's validity or lack thereof, and consider the ramifications of your information. All in all, we all learn more.

And that's the way it should be.

BTW- Thanks for the link. (Anne can be downright disturbing)

7. Great Links. Roberts' Nomination is Most Critical Issue We Face
It's bigger than the 2004 election. Granted, if we had won the 2004 election, we would not be facing the Roberts issue...but we could win big in 2006 and 2008, and it won't really help our situation if the SC is dominated by extremest reactionary right-wing ideologues like Scalia and Roberts.

The Religious Reich realized this some years ago - you can win all the elections you want and STILL have your agenda frustrated by the courts...hence their obsession with seizing control of the courts.

Anyway, I think making sure the SCOTUS does not get turned into an unelected, lifetime appointed right-wing power machine should be our TOP priority. Thanks for the links.
