With the exception of Ruth Bader Ginsbgerg’s work at the ACLU, can anyone tell me of any Supreme Court Justice that has actually represented the average American citizen? Again with the nomination of John Roberts, we have a guy that has spent his life in the legal profession as a political and corporate insider. From my observation, he has been completely out of touch with the people, almost from the time he earned his law degree. Here’s his “stellar” political career as a “lifelong court insider”. I’m not too sure this is what our Founding Fathers had in mind.
- Clerk for Chief Justice Rehnquist - Special assistant to AG under Reagan - Associate counsel in Reagan White House - Solicitor General under Bush I - Corporate lawyer for the likes of ENRON, Pfizer, Proctor and Gamble, Mobile Oil, 3M, Merck, etc.
If confirmed, there will be only one Supreme Court Justice that has any experience representing the average American citizen. That concerns me more than his views on abortion, or state religion. Why not nominate someone who represented Joe or Jane “Six-pack” in their recent divorce proceedings? Why not nominate a lawyer that did “pro-bono” work for a low income citizen whose daughter was injured, or killed due to corporate malfeasance? Why not nominate someone who recently represented a criminal defendant that was wrongly accused? Why not nominate someone who recently defended “Mary Jane American” in a case involving her rights to check-out a library book without the FBI looking up her skirt?
Hell, why does it have to be a lawyer at all? Nothing in the Constitution that says they have to be lawyers. Why not a “Washington outsider” beholden only to the truth.
Perhaps what has been said is really true. “We have the best justice money can buy”.
