Westboro Baptist: U.S. deaths in Iraq "God's punishment for gay tolerance"

The Westboro Baptist Church, a Topeka, Kan., organization largely filled by relatives of its pastor, Fred Phelps, announced last month it was going to picket at Dover Air Force Base and area churches.

The announcement, peppered with Bible verses about divine judgment, said the killings of U.S. soldiers in Iraq were God's punishment for America's tolerance toward gay people -- who Phelps said will be condemned to hell.

"God sent the IEDs," declared one sign, referring to the improvised explosive devices that have killed many soldiers. Others said "Don't worship the dead," referred to gay people with slurs and said homosexuals "doom nations."

Across the street, a couple of police officers stood near their motorcycles and kept watch. Two confrontations occurred between protesters and passers-by, but neither turned physical. In one, a woman driving on the other side of the road pulled her red pickup truck to the curb nearest the protesters. Shouting followed, and her parting shot was "God forgives you!"

The deaths of Americans in Iraq is due to America's tolerance of gays? How exactly is America tolerant? Last November, residents of eleven states voted to approve amendments to their respective state constitutions to ban same-sex marriages, and it's likely that many more will do the same in 2006. My state, for example, approved the measure by a 3-to-1 margin. How exactly is that tolerant?

No, douche bag, Americans are dying in Iraq because our military (which ironically bans homosexuals from service) illegally and immorally invaded their country. Iraqis are killing Americans because of our war policies, not because of our "tolerance" of gays.

And as far as homosexuals "dooming nations," the Netherlands, Sweden, and Canada were all doing fairly well the last time I checked.
