Dear Hawkeye-X:
Thank you for contacting me about President Bush’s nomination of John G. Roberts, Jr. to serve as our next Supreme Court Justice.
The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court of our land. It presides over the third branch of the U.S. Government; and each of the nine Justices is appointed to a lifetime term. Now that the President has submitted his nominee to the Supreme Court, the Senate can move forward with the confirmation process. This will include collecting background information on Judge Roberts, holding hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and discussing his professional experience.
As I have said, I will judge the nominee on three basic principles: fairness, impartiality and a proven record of upholding the law. In the coming weeks the Senate Judiciary Committee will complete a full, fair and proper review of Judge Roberts’ record. Based on the Committee’s work, and my own careful study, I will perform my constitutional duty. I appreciate you sharing your comments. I will keep them in mind as I examine the qualifications of Judge Roberts.
Again, thank you for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Ken Salazar
United States Senator
