Abu Ghraib Photo/Video update via ACLU--F* the administration!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edited on Fri Jul-22-05 02:16 PM by uppityperson
I just got off the phone with the ACLU, media division. She said they have not gotten the photos/videos, that the government filed a court document sayiing that even after being redacted, the photos and videos meet an exception to the (dang, can't read my handwriting of official phrase. public release of records thingy) so are asking that they not be released.

ACLU is filing a response, protesting, etc. They are working on a press statement to be on their website and (I expect) released to the press. Stay tuned.

Edited for spelling.

6. I would not be surprised, with that whole "nuke 'em all" mentality
all arabs should die, but let's sacrifice 2,000 Americans to give them freedom first

4. Freedom of information act?
No information is exactly what these bastards want. Information is power and without it..all we have is blah blah.."national security" which with the Plame debacle is such a bitter irony.

8. typed to fast to spell check. OK, they filed a request to not release them
said that even if redacted, they meet an exception and should not be released. ACLU said ACLU is working on a press statement, not up on website yet. I called National ACLU, got transfered to their press department who told me this.

12. Will the DoD be in contempt of court at midnight tonight?
The court mandated that the pics and videos be released on 6/30/2005. The US Attorney convinced the court to grand an extension until 7/22/2005. Will the judge find the DoD in contempt of court? A contempt case against the regime will not help Bu$h's abysmal credibility. The best scenario would be a contempt case and then release of the pics and videos.

13. If they can defy the courts and the fallout from public opinion
then they can do almost anything. I don't feel that it's out of the question that Patrick Fitzgerald would be removed in favor of a Bush toadie even if indictments are returned by the Grand Jury. In the first two months of the Bush Administration, Koch Industries' Executives were facing a potential of 100 years in federal prison on 97 felony counts for having dumped 91 metric tons of carcinogens into the environment in Texas. The worst part of the crime was the attempted cover-up and destruction of evidence and obstruction of justice to try to fool the federal prosecutors during the Clinton Administration. In addition, there was about a third of a billion dollars in fines about to be levied against Koch. When Bush came into office, one of the first things he did was to end the prosecution against Koch and cut a sweet-heart deal with the Koch Executives in which no one did any time and the fines were lowered to a mere $20 million. Koch was a major Bush campaign contributor throughout his political career, similar to Enron. Bush refused to return the campaign contributions he received from Koch during 2000.

14. why can't they learn? the cover-up is what ALWAYS gets them
Releasing the photos and dealing with it is far better than not releasing them and leaving everyone to speculate how horrible they are. Reading this thread is proof to that...some of us are now speculating whether abuse of children is involved. If the photos were released, we wouldn't have to ponder how horrible it must be for them not to release it.

Under any other circumstance, I would be glad they weren't releasing documents because politically that works in our favor. However, since this involves torture - a clear violation of HUMAN RIGHTS for $%*&@! sake, it's pretty damn impossible to be happy over their idiotic behavior.

it will just make things worse. we must stop the truth wherever possible, for short term benefits. short term meaning january 2009. then you can see the truth.

17. This batch of pictures solid proof of War Crimes?
Can we go after members of this Administration for conspiracy to cover up war crimes? Just something else to hit them with.

They were given until today to produce the images, but at the eleventh hour filed a motion to oppose the release of the photos and videos, based on an entirely new argument:  they are now requesting a 7(F) exemption from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act to withhold law enforcement-related information in order to protect the physical safety of individuals.
