MANCHESTER, N.H. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential contender John Kerry (news - web sites) holds a shrinking three-point lead over Howard Dean (news - web sites) on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, according to a Reuters/MSNBC/Zogby poll released Monday.


Dean shaved four points off Kerry's advantage in the latest three-day tracking poll, as supporters who wavered after his dismal third-place Iowa finish and screaming concession speech appeared to be returning to the fold.


Kerry led Dean 31 percent to 28 percent in the new poll, with John Edwards (news - web sites) jumping three points to narrowly trail Wesley Clark (news - web sites) for third place, 13 percent to 12 percent. Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record) remained static at 9 percent.

Looks bad for our guy I'm afraid. IA was the worst possible outcome for WES. Oh well, I guess we'll see if he has any legs after NH? I'm pretty disappointed at this pt. and really bummed that Kerry (sic) looks like the clear front runner. Kerry reminds me of "Lurch" from the Adams family.

They became well informed of the "dirty side" of politics through that experience. I expected it from the GOP but not from other democrats. Naive I may be but this election is too important to the nation. I expected an honest battle mostly.

27. I agree, I don't think the campaign was ready for the ground war

And Dean is finally making some of the right decisions about his appearances with the media. My take on him is that he's stubborn, and probably had to get smacked in Iowa to realize that he *must* bring his wife into the public eye, and had to do shows like Letterman and the Daily Show. Undecided voters are looking for reasons to eliminate candidates, and not showing that human side is one way to lose their votes.

7. I agree--the CW (conventional wisdom) is that a short primary is better

because candidates don't waste $ fighting themselves AND they have less time to bash each other.

But a long primary also has a lot going for it--

1. It forces the media to report real criticisms of the Bush mis-administration.

2. It gets more states involved, hence, building more support going into the general election.

This looks like the Zogby poll results...the SOB switched methods so it isn't really comparible to the rest of his own tracking poll series. I'm stumped as to why they would confound things that way.

Remember, the only polls about NH that count are tommorrow's in the voting booths.

I think out of all the polls, this is probably the closest to being right; with absolutely NO scientific basis for feeling so, it just 'feels' right. Dr. Dean has helped himself a lot in the last 4-5 days, and I think his campaign may have regained its stride.

Who knows, Dr. Dean might eke out a victory tomorrow.
