60% of America approves of Roe vs Wade.
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 05:55 PM by Sean Reynolds
So says CBS News Poll done on July 13-14. That's a pretty big number.

Also a CNN Poll done in June shows that 75% of Americans believe abortion should be sometimes/always legal.

Yet to hear people from the right talk about it, you'd think most Americans oppose Roe vs Wade.

15. Hey when I wrote to his post it said something else
I thought it used to say something about freepers. It's either been changed (through editing)or I miss read it. I was responding to a statement about them still trying to keep abortions illeagal, even though 60% of Americans agreed.

Thus the control statement geez you big bully!!!

18. LOL! Well, by 'you' I meant
'he whoever is so ignorant as to force his beliefs on others despite information to the contrary of those beliefs'

(I suppose many freeper-types fall into that category)

"The night is black
Without a moon
The air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on
The lonely torch lit hill

Features distorted in the flickering light
The faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
The mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right
Confident their ways are best

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill

They say there are strangers who threaten us
In our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous
In our theaters and bookstore shelves
That those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand..."

Rush - 'Witch Hunt' 1981

We are up against wrought ignorance.

4. John McCain said most of America is prolife now...You mean McCain LIED?
Again?

Gee....but...on Hardball...he said clearly that America has finally moved to the right on abortion and is ready to take the prolife position just like him.

9. He may not be wrong...
The tragedy here is that this debate has been fully framed by a complete misconception. And that is that 'pro-life' and 'pro-choice' are diametrically opposed positions.

They are not.

I would wager that the vast majority of 'Pro-Choice' advocates do not usually look favorably on pregnancy terminations.

I think the vast majority of reasonable people can agree that abortions are not usually a 'good' thing.

It is the unreasonable people who have screwed this issue out of recognition.

I am Pro-life and Pro-choice.

6. And many of those 60% support all kinds of restrictions
Parental consent laws, parental notification laws, making women waste time reading anti-abortion propaganda, "partial birth" bans, etc.

These laws may be popular and pass constitutional scrutiny, bad they are bad public policy.

17. I can agree with most of that.
Parental notification can actually endanger the physical and emotional well-being of a young person who is in an unfortunate place to begin with.

The 'Partial birth' ban only applies to a late term procedure that the majority of physicians/OB/Gyns would not perform unless the mother's life were at stake anyway... in which case the ban has an obvious flaw.

As for the 'making women waste time reading anti-abortion propaganda', there are instances where the doctor is simply practicing ethical behavior.

Most clinics show a video or pamphlets to their patients and offer them counseling to make absolutely certain that the patient understands exactly what she is doing and to determine that they are not being coerced into their decision.

Certainly there are places that may use incorrect information, and that is irresponsible. But by and large the clinic is both watching out for the patient as well as covering themselves.

11. Freepers don't believe it
This is from a Freeper Poll:

I don't believe the liberal claims that the majority of Americans support abortion as a right. Would you favor laws making abortion illegal in your state?

Yes
41.8%

Yes, with exceptions
38.3%

No
16.6%

Pass
1.6%

Undecided
1.6%

-snip-

Why? They cannot believe that a MOTHER can be Pro Choice. They think any woman who is pro choice is a slut, unmarried, and childless. If this is what they really think, they are in for a MAJOR surprise.

As I wrote in my email to James Dobson and Focus on the Family, "You, do NOT represent ME or MY family."

Although, I am beyond the age now, but for Rape? Definitely. Fetal Deformity, Unmarried, Family complete? Probably.

I still feel though that I have NO RIGHT to decide for any OTHER woman. That is HER choice.

I could never tell a woman what to do...just like I'm sure anti-choice people wouldn't like the government telling them they need to abort THEIR babies.
