Roberts Listed in Federalist Society '97-'98 Directory
Roberts Listed in Federalist Society '97-'98 Directory
The Washington Post
By: Charles Lane
07/25/05

Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. has said that he has no memory of belonging to the Federalist Society, but his name appears in the influential, conservative legal organization's 1997-1998 leadership directory.

Having served only two years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit after a long career as a government and private-sector lawyer, Roberts has not amassed much of a public paper record that would show his judicial philosophy. Working with the Federalist Society provides some clue of his sympathies. The organization keeps its membership rolls secret, but many key policymakers in the Bush administration are acknowledged current or former members.

Roberts has burnished his legal image carefully. When news organizations have reported his membership in the society, he or others speaking on his behalf have sought corrections. Last week, the White House told news organizations that had reported his membership in the group that he had no memory of belonging. The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and the Associated Press printed corrections.

Over the weekend, The Post obtained a copy of the Federalist Society Lawyers' Division Leadership Directory, 1997-1998. It lists Roberts, then a partner at the law firm Hogan & Hartson, as a member of the steering committee of the organization's Washington chapter and includes his firm's address and telephone number.

1. Just start the drumbeat. He lied -- just like others in this rotten crew.
Good reporting, Charles Lane.

PS. What do you do when you print a correction -- but the original story turns out to be true. Will these organization print corrections of their corrections?

Thanks for posting this and bring it to our attention.

Roberts Exposed as Federalist Society Member

Last week Ed Gillespie was “correcting” news reports that John Roberts had been a member of the conservative Federalist Society as the White House attempted to sanitize Roberts’ history to make him appear to be almost a moderate. The Washington Post has found that Roberts has been listed as a member:

"Over the weekend, The Post obtained a copy of the Federalist Society Lawyers’ Division Leadership Directory, 1997-1998. It lists Roberts, then a partner at the law firm Hogan & Hartson, as a member of the steering committee of the organization’s Washington chapter and includes his firm’s address and telephone number.

"Yesterday, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Roberts “has no recollection of being a member of the Federalist Society, or its steering committee.” Roberts has acknowledged taking part in some Federalist Society activities, Perino said."

There remains a lot of questions as to what type of justice Roberts would make on the Supreme Court, but one thing for sure. The Orwellian deception we have seen from the Bush White House for the last five years is extending to his first Supreme Court nomination.

11. I remember reading that Roberts wasn't a member because he
didn't pay the $50 membership fee. Yeah right ... these people keep creating alternate realities that are then repeated by their robotons over the radio and tv waves and the people just eat it up as the truth. It makes me sooooooooo sick!

6. There they go again with a cover up spin
They tried to cover it up by lying, and now they are spinning it with forgetfulness.

Listen you don't forget you were in a leadership role in the Federalist Society; and if you do forget, you best not be sitting on the highest bench of our world judging any of us.

These faux moralistic snobs make me sick with their lies and trickery.

8. Please donate now!
The American Selective Amnesia Society needs your help. The terrible, tragic disease of selective amnesia is running rampant through the Republican party. Won't you give now to stop this disease in our lifetime?

10. I suppose they think
that they are never lying if they always just say "No, I don't think i remember that"

I suppose that even more so, they think others will buy it...

Someday bush will say "I don't recall ever invading Iraq."

13. Even better...
He doesn't have to say he doesn't recall. He can just say "I never invaded Iraq". After all, he only gave the orders, and later delivered some turkey. You can't prove he ever invaded.

Foo!
