The Wake Up America Campaign

Okay, I'm going out on a limb here... I want your opinions.

September 11th is fast approaching and I think we should do something about the horrific condition of our country and the mostly oblivious people that live in it. I posted this to Frederik's thread about the Indira Singh interview and ever since cannot stop thinking we need to DO SOMETHING, all of us collectively, to wake up the people of this country before it's too late.

The media's not going to help us (we know that), but we should still put them on notice. This would be unprecedented. I'm thinking we should actually and literally petition the American people with carefully selected, bite-size chunks of the ugly truth (in language even Joe Barcalounger can comprehend, of course), with the signatures of hundreds, even thousands, of Americans, delivered to every driveway, windshield, telephone pole, newspaper, media outlet and blog we can find. We can post it on the steps of Congress. We could have street-corner demonstrations at busy intersections. We could coordinate with other groups like Moveon, PDA, freeway bloggers, Code Pink, DFA, any other groups we can get on board. We've got to start a buzz. It would be really powerful to coordinate all our efforts to culminate on the anniversary of 9/11.

We could call it the People to People Petition, or the Wake Up America!! Campaign.... I don't care WHAT we call it. I know the brilliant minds here will help come up with something catchy.

If this gets enough response, maybe Skinner will enlist the DU Activist corps. Let's hear your thoughts, people.

wipe the sleep out of their eyes and start paying attention, that'd be a real good start.

So much that has been fought and died for in this great land of ours is in jeopardy and people are just asleep at the wheel. Those of us who know what's up (and care about the mess we're leaving behind for our children) have got to shake the rest into consciousness. It's the LEAST we can do!

If you can get this organized, I'll do whatever I can.

I wish all of this would wake up America but unfortunately the only thing that really gets their attention is a Michael Jackson or Scott Peterson trial, or a celebrity breakup or affair. Then they are glued to their TV and ragsheets. You could hire a celebrity but Americans only want to be entertained by them or gossip about them. When they try to make a political stand they are criticized for having an opinion.
