Huge election in Ohio -->> One week from today!
On Tuesday, August 2nd --- Will we get a chance to see Diebold in action?

Iraq War Veteran (D) Paul Hackett is rocking and rolling right now in the fight for a seat in Congress against (R) Jean Schmidt.

From what the media is saying, he has a ton of momentum all of a sudden. Even received the endorsement of the conservative paper, the Cincinatti Post today. :o

He's realing in donations big time right now too. The R-opponent on the other hand, had to just donate $20K to her own race.

Anyone following this race.. what do you think? Can he pull it off? Things are sure looking bright for him. Will Diebold be tested?

5. God, I hope this guy wins - he's great!!! Check out the Salon article:
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/07/26/hackett_schmidt/index.html

I read this article, fell in love and had hope renewed for poor Ohio!

I also got a ltr of support about him from Democracy For America (DFA).

Disgustingly, the Ohio repub candidate is trying to smear him Swift-Liars style - can you believe it???
An Iraq veteran and they are already attempting to question his service record???? They have no shame! Support the troops, my ass.

I hope he kicks their asses all over the Buckeye State.

Can we do anything for him in this last week?

Go Paul Go!

12. Questioning whether he was in direct line of fire or some such bullshit
And that came directly from the opposing candidate.

She said something along the lines of "I thank him for his svc, but I'm not sure he was in direct combat, blah, blah blah"

I am searching like mad for a link to the story I read on this, just today, but I read so many news sources, I'm still looking....will post when I find....

In any case, it was downright disgusting - and par for the republican course.

13. oh yeah, well I don't think
she was in the direct line of fire. First of all, that's complete BS from what I have been reading and second, what's the difference? I'm sure he went wherever they told him to go. You don't have to be on the front lines to get killed by a roadside bomb - the biggest killer over there. That's completely disgusting. If a democrat questioned the patriotism of someone just back from Iraq *especially* when they didn't have to go, I honestly don't think I could vote for them no matter what else they said.

16. on edit, it was made by one of her aides, but she hasn't refuted it
those repubs never back down from insult and ignorance.

So far, I'm just finding the incident referenced in several blogs, but I KNOW I read it earlier today in a direct news source.

It was made by a male aide, who had inferred he made a trip to Baghdad himself..???

She was apparently asked about it on a radio show and she dodged it.

I will keep looking...

14. Well, the Swiftboat Liars can take this news and shove it:
..."CINCINNATI, July 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Veterans’ Alliance for Security and Democracy Political Action Committee announced its support for the Congressional campaign of Paul Hackett, the Democratic candidate in the August 2, 2005 special election in Ohio’s second congressional district. Hackett, a former U.S. Marine Corps major who served in the Iraq war would, if elected, become the first Iraq war veteran to serve in Congress.

“We support Paul for his intelligence, courage and commitment to public service.” Said Fred Allingham, VETPAC field director."... http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=50847

15. He responded today in Salon. Here is some of the response from
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 06:37 PM by Pirate Smile
Swing State Project:

""Schmidt commends Hackett for his service, but believes Hackett should "stand with the president" by 'supporting the Iraqi war effort and our troops that are over there,' her campaign manager Joe Braun said. (Through Braun, Schmidt declined to speak with Salon.) When asked to answer that charge, Hackett is blunt: 'The only way I know how to support the troops is by going over there.' He doesn't hesitate to criticize Schmidt's support of the war: "All the chicken hawks back here who said, 'Oh, Iraq is talking bad about us. They're going to threaten us' -- look, if you really believe that, you leave your wife and three kids and go sign up for the Army or Marines and go over there and fight. Otherwise, shut your mouth."

This is what happens when the GOP faces opposition like it hasn't seen in over 30 years.

I'll :puke:, knowing that THEY do not support any of the troops who dare question authority (and illegitimate authority at that due to **two** stolen elections). :grr:

I really see us winning back Ohio and the Federal government come the 2006 and 2008. My confidence is growing daily. The Refugs have messed up Ohio and I think theyre gonna pay for it.

11. Ksec...
Have they been announcing poll numbers in Ohio? :) He sure seems to be getting some huge endorsements from the media, veteran's groups, etc.. But this is what Wikipidea "the free internet encyclopedia" has to say:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hackett - says this ..."However, because the district last elected a Democrat in 1966–and no Democrat has gotten more than 37 per cent of the vote since 1974–Hackett is widely expected to lose the election."

From the way the sounds of things in the media.. he sure isn't "widely expected to lose"

If he wins.. it will be major MOJO for Ohio and the nation! No Democratic winner since 1966 :o

Go Hackett! :bounce:

in Clermont County. Will be interesting to see if Warren County pulls the same type of MO.

20. The Repubs are in full SMEAR mode..
Hackett is pulling in over $100K a day :o :o :o --- and they are in full swiftboat attack-mode!

GOP Cowardice: "Paul Hackett, a Marine reservist, is running in a special election in Ohio's 2nd District. Now, his opponent, faced with a scandal of her own and Hackett raising over $100K in a day from online contributions, is questioning his service as a Civil Affairs officer in Fallujah," writes Steve Gilliard.".. http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/23738/

23. From what I understand
his opponent, Jean Schmidt, is such a right wing extremist, she tells breast cancer survivors they got the disease because they had abortions. She accused some well known breast cancer groups in Ohio of using the funds they raise to pay for abortions. She's a complete nut job. Here's the group she's affiliated with...

24. You left out the best part
Gilliard's written response:

"Let's get down to brass tacks: Mr. Minamyer's attacks on Paul Hackett's service to our country are nothing more than disgusting partisan attempt to score points against someone who risked his life to follow the orders of our President. Emphasis on OUR President Mr. Minamyer. This site for one would advise the Schmidt campaign to tighten the leash of their advisor Eric Minamyer. He's not doing her campaign any good by peddling this swill.

"As for you, Mr. Minamyer: if you have any questions for Paul Hackett about his service, I suggest that you ask him to his face. He's easy enough to find these days."
