In 2006, Democrats have to defend 17 Senate seats,
three of which are being vacated.

In order to gain a 51 seat majority, Democrats must pick up seven Republican seats. If Bernie Sanders wins in Vermont, Democrats will only need to pick up six Republican seats.

That is assuming, of course, that we can keep those 17 Democratic seats.

In 2006, Democrats have to defend 202 House seats.

In order to gain a 218 seat majority, Democrats must pick up 16 Republican seats. If a Democrat can win the House seat currently held by Bernie Sanders, Democrats will only need to pick up 15 Republican seats.

That is assuming, of course, that we can keep those 202 Democratic seats.

In 2002, the Republican Party picked up two Senate seats and eight House seats.

In 2004, the Republican Party picked up four Senate seats and three House seats.

In 2006, if the Republican Party gains more seats, it will be essentially... a trifecta.

Sorry if that's not as sexy as speculation about Hillary.

6. Scary stuff
Makes me long for the surprise results of 2000 (in the Senate, not the White House!). I'll be praying!
