American Daily: "If Karl Rove were a Democrat, he'd be forgiven"
WHAT IF KARL ROVE WERE A DEMOCRAT?
By Roger Aronoff (07/27/05)

http://www.americandaily.com/article/8452

· Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) went on the floor of the Senate and said there was a “problem” revealed in a private FBI file on a judicial nominee, Judge Henry Saad. Senate rules require Senators “to keep FBI information strictly confidential.”

· Senator John Kerry (D-MA) identified a covert CIA officer by name during confirmation hearings for John Bolton as UN ambassador. The committee chairman had repeatedly requested that the agent not be named.

· Sandy Berger, former National Security Adviser under President Clinton, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in federal court. Berger admitted that he intentionally took and destroyed copies of classified documents from the National Archives. He had stuffed some in his pants, cut some of them up with scissors, and lied to the investigators and the American public. He claimed he was reviewing Clinton administration documents to decide which ones to provide to the commission investigating the 9/11 attacks on Washington D.C. and New York. He said it had been “an honest mistake” and that he “deeply regrets” his actions.

Time will tell how these episodes compare to the actions of Karl Rove and others in the Bush administration. But the public evidence against Rove at this point is mighty thin and the case seems minor compared to the incidents cited above. We can only conclude that the media frenzy is disproportionate to the facts of the case, and that coverage of Rove represents a clear double standard by reporters eager to go after Republicans but willing to ignore worse transgressions by Democrats. If Karl Rove were a Democrat, he would be forgiven by the press and reporters would be returning to him for more juicy tidbits of information.

12. The GOP Victim Mentality
I always say it. They are always victims of something. If it isn't the Democratic Attack Machine, it's the Librul Media and if it isn't that it's the Liberal Elites who run this country. Those poor Conservatives are always fighting against this system which is owned by a gigantic Liberal Monolith. I wish a Liberal Leviathan existed, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now, on all fronts.

1. he didn't read out the file, nor did he leak its contents to the media, then cover up the leak.

2. this agents name was already in the public record, whether or not the republicans thought they could stuff it back in the box.

3. he PLED GUILTY. he also resigned his position with the kerry campaign long before. he would be an excellent role model for mr rove.

13. I wish
progressive Democrats are the only grownups around and they number all too few, my friend. They certainly don't control anything.

But, honest, don't you just get sick of the tone? All the antics? It's awful, imo. It's like little kids fighting on a playground.

11. Is this guy on crack? If he was then HE should be forgiven.....
for writing such a stupid article.

Sandy Berger admitted what he did was wrong. He pleaded guilty in court and is paying whatever legal price was required. It didn't hurt anybody but himself.

Kerry and Reid didn't do anything that cost people lives. Plus, that isn't a big deal really. Senators have been known to do that stuff from time to time. It isn't necessarily right, especially in Kerry's case, but again, nobody was hurt from it. Assuming the writer even has his information correct, anyway.

But Karl Rove played politics with a national security asset. He vindictively outed a covert CIA agent in order to get back at her husband who refuted a story that the administration lied about to go to war. A war that has cost the lives and maimed a great many good people, for pretty much no reason. It was also a calculated attempt to prevent any other whistleblower from refuted this administration's lies.

So no, Karl shouldn't just be forgiven. His situation is much bigger and much worse. But, I will be willing to forgive Rove when, like Sandy Berger, he admits he's wrong, goes to court and pleads guilty of his crimes.

And, if he thinks that Karl Rove would be forgiven if he was a Democrat then that dumb fucker must have never lived through the 1990s.

16. If these were such a problem the CIA would have asked
that the Justice department investigate them also, as they did for the Plame outing. Apparently there was no problem there. Only in the (twisted) minds of some 'leaders'.

This guy needs to get real. If Karl Rove were a Democrat he would've been simultaneously disemboweled, drawn and quartered, set on fire, and electrocuted long before now.

18. I sent a letter - which they will throw - but I feel better! :-)
Does Roger Aronoff making a lie “one off” by saying it came from The Center for Individual Freedom make "Accuracy in Media"" lies as told by Roger Aronoff less a lie?

The 1917 Intel Act is not even mentioned by Roger, nor are the words conspiracy and obstruction of justice, nor “what did the President know and when did he know it”, and indeed the 12 hour gap which really a 3 day gap per MSNBC between the Bush administration knowing of the inquiry and Card telling folks to stop destroying evidence seems missing and replaced by this pack of lies.

The CIA said that Plame’s name was covered by the law, and we lost 40 agents, one dead perhaps, and a cover company was exposed. And that does not even get to the 1917 Act where simple “mistakes” in choosing the information you release gets you jail time.

Then Blue smoke about how the method the CIA used to maintained her cover – “…Plame gave money to Al Gore’s presidential campaign in 2000 using her married name (Wilson as in Mrs. Wilson – WOW) and identified her employer as a CIA-front company (that the CIA wanted her to identify with). She worked at the CIA headquarters in Virginia and was listed in her husband’s biography….” This does not change a damn thing, and Roger knows that.

“President Bush promised to fire anyone involved” but as reconstructed by “Accuracy” Bush really did not mean that!

So we have “Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) went on the floor of the Senate and said there was a “problem” revealed in a private FBI file on a judicial nominee, Judge Henry Saad. Senate rules require Senators “to keep FBI information strictly confidential.”, as if the comment revealed something – like it violated a law – NO WAY!

Then we have Bull about “John Kerry (D-MA) identified a covert CIA officer by name” when the identity had been exposed earlier – by Republicans – and the fellow was not covert – unlike Mrs. Wilson.

We do get a true statement – a rarity for “Accuracy” - in the “John Deutsch, the CIA director under former President Clinton, “wrote, stored and accessed classified memos on the same unsecured home computer that he used to surf the Internet.”

A Federal Appeals Court makes no finding about Bill Richardson but Roger notes an Appeals Court note that said New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, “was a likely source of disparaging leaks about former Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee,” while Richardson was Energy Secretary under President Clinton.” And then he pretends that Richardson’s comments involved national security information because “The case involved national security information.”

A Spy satellite budget discussion that not even the Senate GOP had a problem with is now “Democratic Senators Rockefeller and Wyden improperly disclosed the existence of a classified spy satellite”. last year while on the floor of the Senate, while expressing opposition to what they felt was too much spending by the Bush administration.

He dares to bring up the Iran-Contra investigation that was sending many of our current GOP hero’s to jail until Bush Sr. pardoned everyone so as to protect his own hide. And the Treason by Reagan/Bush and company is partially leaked by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Roger finds that because it included information on how the CIA gathered intelligence (torture/murder/drugs and a few other ways), what Leahy did makes Rove/Libby/Cheney/Bush not traitors? I love “accuracy’s logic”.

Then Sandy Berger, former National Security Adviser under President Clinton, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in federal court. Berger admitted that he intentionally took and destroyed copies of classified documents from the National Archives – all true so far. But Roger adds “He had stuffed some in his pants, cut some of them up with scissors, and lied to the investigators and the American public” as if the transport method was not in his pockets and his notebook – and the lie being he thought he had notes but he had “original” photo-copies. Then a truth “He claimed he was reviewing Clinton administration documents to decide which ones to provide to the commission investigating the 9/11 attacks on Washington D.C. and New York. He said it had been “an honest mistake” and that he “deeply regrets” his actions.” – but while Roger does note we are talking about photo-copies – he does not note that nothing was hidden so as to hide treason - which the likely event in this Bush/Rove action.

As the right wing Fox News panel said this week, via Ann C and agreement by the others – the right wing owns the media.

So Roger’s “If Karl Rove were a Democrat, he would be forgiven by the press and reporters would be returning to him for more juicy tidbits of information.” Is not only wrong and stupid, it is also silly. Roger Aronoff is a very poor media analyst with Accuracy in Media – but then that is what Accuracy in the Media wants, isn’t it?
