CAFTA Passes 217-215
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 11:12 PM by sunnystarr
YAY NAY NV

Republican 202 27 2
Democrat 15 187
Independent 1

TOTAL 217 215

Not only did it pass due to 15 Dems, but it looks like the deal Bush and Cheney made was for some Rs not to vote unless it was a YAY.

I'm sick over this.

*edited to correct final vote and I take back the reason for the NV since it was only 2 ... but then again ...

36. of the 2 NV, the guy from NC said he voted NO
and that it wasn't recorded, there was another thread about people calling his office in NC and complaining and what about the other rep?

That could mean the vote was ACTUALLY A TIE, but is being covered up!!!!

Put it on a trend chart. A few years ago this would have sailed through with "bipartisan support."

This time even a fair number of Repubs were against it.

10. Ok, now, wait a minute.
That was 15 Dems out of 202. That's 7%. Now, those Democrats who voted for CAFTA should be held accountable for their vote. Call them, e-mail them, vote against them in the primary.

However, 93% of Democrats voted against CAFTA. That means that 93% of our reps. did the right thing. 93% didn't sell us out. Please don't bash the whole party over 15 sellouts.

14. And furthermore...
How many members of the House Dems are DLC? I think at least 50. This also means that even if the 15 defectors are all DLC, even the majority of the DLC voted with us.

As bad as CAFTA might turn out to be, I think the Democrats as a whole showed who they stand with tonight.

15. I applaud all those who did ...
but we only needed 3 out of those 15 to vote NAY. Isn't it interesting that only 2 Rs didn't vote ... bet they would have voted NAY making it a tie. Bush and Cheney didn't make a personal visit for nothing. However we could have applied some pressure on those 15 and defeated it. They closed the vote before getting the majority of 218 ... so they knew that they wouldn't get that one extra vote. So I really want those Dem names.

21. Probably not
there were probably a handful of other Republicans who would have voted yes if it was needed.

That's pretty typical in these kinds of votes. You'll have reps who tell the president that a yes vote might cause them to lose their seats.

So the president's men will work it out and actually give marginal guys "permission" to vote no.

If one Democratic rep would have changed his vote to no, you would see one Rep rep change his vote to yes.

On the other hand, if 6 more Dems would have voted no, then that would have forced 6 more Reps to have voted yes putting their seats at risk.

16. Democrats & the DLC
All we needed were just a few less Democratic turncoats and CAFTA would have failed. Let's all send a thank you note to the DLC for their support of Corporate America and their sellout of American workers on this issue. This was the worst of the worst "free-slave" bills and the DLC still supported it.

As for the 202 Repubs.......... no more in 2006.

As for the 15 Dems............. no more in 2006.

I cannot support anyone who would overlook 14 year old girls working 12 hours a day for 2 dollars and one 15 minute break a day. That job would come from US companies that move jobs of people who have been employed for 30 years full time, supporting their families.

Just disgusting...

Geezus.... Norm's hardly a liberal, but his district (apart from the military bases) contains some of the most economically devastated areas of the state, mostly towns dependent on the fishing and timber industries which put themselves out of business through greed and overharvesting. How the Hell can he be thinking that outsourcing jobs to Central America is going to help the Olympic Peninsula??

Unbelievable.

To come here now and take a bow.
gloat, condescend , tell me why this is so gosh darned good for America.
Gloat, celebrate your victory, then offer me a reason why the DLC should not be removed from the party like the cancerous growth it is.

Tell me why there has been such an effort to proselytize of late.
Tell me why we should allow you to fully metastasize as seems to be your endeavor of late.

Somehow I don't think that when I log on tomorrow I will be assaulted with the missionary posts of the priests of the new democratic enlightenment.

I expect no conversion on my part after succumbing to post after post of brilliant DSM wisdom concerning this issue.

I suspect this because I believe they are too ashamed to take pride in what they have accomplished tonight.
Like all of the really good sales reps out there, they know when their product sucks and when not to focus on why.

It is indeed time to remove this cancer, it has become one of my new hobbies!

Goodnight all - and thanks to those that have posted that they have my back.

I guess I can't blame them. I am not clever enough to see why the DLC position on trade is so good for working folks like myself.
It would be a waste of such beautiful minds to condescend to the likes of me.
If I were a worthy individual I would be a CEO by now and thus capable of grasping such lofty Ideals.
I am just not cultured enough or intelligent enough for them.

There is more than one DINO type Congress Critter out there hiding behind false Democratic colors. They are helping only the corporatists and therefore should be replaced in the primaries if at all possible. Failing that, Independents may be able to challenge them.

34. Vote Held Open
The vote was held open by Tom Delay and the Republicans. At first when the when time for the vote expired CAFTA had been voted down. Then Delay broke the House rules and allowed the time for debate to stay open for an hour so he could get more votes. I think the Democrats should put this fact out every time they talk about CAFTA.

Congressional candidates mentioned this over and over again to no effect. Most of these Representatives live in districts that are safe. And for the GOP, their districts will support this vote anyway. If it means they can buy things for a dime less at Wally World, these idiots will support it, without ever noticing the "Made in China" (or made in Guatemala") labels and without thinking about the millions of lost jobs and suppressed wages that result from saving that dime.
