REMEMBER...the 23-30% tax suggested by John Linder is a LIE. Every economist (other than the ones on Bush's payroll) that has seen this plan has said that in order to abolish the IRS, a tax of AT LEAST 50% would be needed (in addition to current state taxes).
And REMEMBER...under Linder's plan, RENT and MEDICAL VISITS would be taxed. Let's say you pay $1000 rent for an apartment and have an 8.25% state tax. If a National Sales Tax went into effect, your new monthly rent would be $1582.
ONLY the people making $18,000 / year and UNDER will receive the much-publicized "prebate" checks. Everyone else will be "encouraged to save" by not spending on anything other than survival items.
Unemployed? Living off of your savings? Guess what. When you spend that money in the bank that has ALREADY BEEN TAXED, the government will collect the current state sales tax and AN ADDITIONAL 50%.
Let's say you earned the money when you were in a 35% tax bracket. The government got 35 cents out of every dollar you earned. If you spend it RIGHT NOW and have an 8% state sales tax, the government now owns 43 cents out of every dollar you've earned / saved. Under a National Sales Tax, spend your money and the government will ultimately have NINETY THREE CENTS out of EVERY dollar you've earned / saved.
Seniors, retirees and the unemployed will be SCREWED, BLUED, and TATTOOED.
The worst case scenario is the NST ADDED to the EXISTING income tax.
I've seen reports recently about the "new, fair and simple tax code" push as a wolf in sheep's clothing...a way to restructure the tax code and increase taxes to finance Social Security and bring down the deficit.
People need to start becoming educated and concerned on this issue. It's the one that holds the greatest potential for the complete and final slaughter of the middle class as we know it.
