Something I am working on (Women's Health)
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 06:22 PM by Horse with no Name
Regarding activist pharmacists.
"If retail pharmacies make the choice not to fill legal prescriptions that are included in the Medicaid/Insurance company formularies, then said pharmacy is excluded from any third party payments for any medication that it dispenses."

Let's drop the morals out of this thing and put it back on the almighty dollar. They can choose to be moral and run a cash business. I shouldn't be the one who has to bear the burden of paying cash when I have insurance.
I want it to be all or nothing. If the insurance company tells me I can only use certain pharmacies, then that pharmacy should be obligated BY THEIR CONTRACT WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANY--without prejudice--to fill ANY prescription drug on the formulary. The insurance companies goals are to have pharmacies in the areas of their consumers. It doesn't do me any good if they refuse to fill certain medications. It HAS to be all or nothing.
As soon as I get this wording out--it's going to NARAL and Planned Parenthood.
I think if the insurance companies are forced to be put in the middle here--it will be a win for the consumer.
What do you all think?

2. Also, get your physician involved in the issue...
Most docs are really pissed off that a pharmacist, whose job is to carry out a PHYSICIAN'S ORDER, refuse to do their expected job requirement.

You complain to the manager.
You complain to the drug company.
But then, you need to complain to the physician, who will then complain to the drug store and insurance, and in turn, the insurance company will come back at the drug store.
The drug store owner is now having their "bottom line" threatened.

3. You make excellent points ...
In the end I think "we" would be better off working with insurance companies, pushing them to require that if they contract with a pharmacy that pharmacy is obligated to fill all prescriptions for drugs that they cover ...

Money (unfortunately) talks louder than anything.

This issues still ticks me off ... If you are morally opposed to your job find another job or another profession; one that does not compromise your morals. Let me assure you you are not going to find me working in a "gun shop" or a sporting goods store for that very reason!
