Poll question: Will you stay in the United States if neocons still control the US in '08
With the large majorities in Congress, do you also believe we have a chance of taking control of either the House or the Senate in '06?

House
232 Republicans, 202 Democrats, and 1 Independent

Senate
55 Republicans, 44 Democrats, and 1 Independent

1. Probably but I really don't know.
If the American people are really that stupid, it really won't matter; stick a fork in it, it's done.

that it's the Repukes who are about done. A lot of people are wising up and getting fed up. Could just be that the Repukes have finally shot themselves in the foot. Time will tell, but I don't think the "God / guns / gays" rhetoric is gonna cut it for them in '08.

If the neocons still control the country in 08...it won't be the US anymore.

4. I'm not entirely convinced I'll survive the Bush regime that long
If we don't get Congress back in 2006, I expect I'll be fleeing for my life or leaving the country dead.

7. And also.....
No matter where in the globe you move to - - for better or worse, no one would be able to escape the long arm of a 100% fascist United States.

13. This is the larger issue and a very good point!
A completely fascist U.S. would cover the globe like a giant octopus. There'd be no getting away from it, really.

8. Well, there's nothing keeping me here now............
except the promise of '06 and '08. If they both go terribly awry, Canada is a mere 90 miles north of me, I'm retired (disability actually) 54 years old, and sick and tired of fighting these pieces of shit.

I might pack it in, having visited Canada so many times for so long, I'd love to live there I think. Someone younger and more able bodied would have to pick up my torch. I'm getting too old for this crap!

So I guess the answer would be, no. I would not stay in the U.S. if we lost on '06 and '08. I can barely stand it now. If they control things much longer there won't be anything left of what I knew as America.

Less than an hour ago I told my husband that if Cat Killer Frist wins in 2008, we're moving to Canada on November 3. He agreed.

Cat Killer Frist is unlikely to get their nomination and zilch chance of winning the election if he did.

32. I agree.
We traveled around Europe last summer. It was so nice. In Sweden, people have health insurance & dental provided by the government. They all seemed happy, healthy. They were really nice.

Most of the people we met have 5-week paid vacations every summer. Most of them have vacation houses where they go for a few weeks.

It was SO nice. In fact, we're looking into possibly moving to Europe.

As far as Canada, I'm sure they would be happy to have more people, in particular DU:ers. Canada has always been people-poor; it's been a huge country, but not very many people.

US's loss is Canada's gain.

I retire in 2016. As a federal employee, I'm stuck here until then.

Regardless of the political climate, I'm leaving in 2016, however.

This place has gotten too squirrelly for me.

They all have still managed to keep a fire going, as well as other worthy traditions of honesty, caring, sharing and respect.

I Reckon one Connecticut preppy cheerleader with a shameful, and hidden, AWOL-Deserter record, will not inspire me to yield in any essential form.

The fire must be tended. I am happy to help with that.

24. With the Neocons philosophy being U.S. global dominance...
emmigrating to another country might buy you some time.

I like to think of the neocons like weeds in a garden. It is easier to fight weeds when they first take root in your garden, rather than waiting until they overtake your garden. Much better to make your stand against them here in the U.S.

33. yes--my husband and I are too old to try to start over
somewhere else. You need a lot of resources/assets to try to do that or else youth. We will have neither in 2008- he will be 66yrs old then.

My daughter and her husband could possibly leave--they are making plans now just in case.

34. How to survive in a 'perfect storm' -- You cannot wait for a draft, people
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 01:05 PM by aion
If this 'perfect storm' brews as it has so many times in the past, there will likely be a couple stages to look for before leaving.

It's a very rare politician who will put his career at risk unnecessarilly. Therefore, there are a couple pools of people that they'll likely tap first before proceeding to the general population.

A red flag will be seen if the government starts giving convicted minor criminals the choice to 'serve' their sentence in prison or on the battlefield.

Another thing that the Romans utilized quite effectively was to offer citizenship to those outside the empire willing to fight the empire's battles. Have there been any demographic shifts in the recruits?

When they exhaust those pipelines, they'll go to their lottery system. At that point, you could dissent for political and religious reasons.

My passport is a few years old, but how do you like this little dual entendre:

The Secretary of State of the United States of America
hereby requests all whom it may concern to permit the citizen/national
of the United States named herein to pass without delay or hindrance
and in case of need to give all lawful aid and protection

I would argue that this statement can be read/understood quite differently depending on who whose need is considered. Using your passport during a draft may send you straight to bootcamp when you hit the border checkpoint.

Those of you who wait until the draft begins will find your options already seriously limited.
