'Revolt of the Elders', group of GOPs organize to attack conservatives

An independent group organized by Pete McCloskey, a former Republican congressman from the Bay Area and a Doolittle critic, created the ads and signed a one-year $41,500 contract to run the spots on the glittering billboard.

McCloskey's group - a collection of moderate Republicans called Revolt of the Elders - has been targeting the conservative congressman who's represented Placer County since 1990.

Four spots had run attacking Doolittle's opposition to embryonic stem cell research, his vote against benefits for National Guard members and his association with a Washington, D.C., lobbyist under investigation for his dealings with Indian gaming.

Revolt of the Elders was listed at the bottom of each spot, along with McCloskey's home phone number. Since last spring, Revolt of the Elders has targeted various conservative members of Congress, including Doolittle and Reps. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy and Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

Robinson, Doolittle's chief of staff, said that McCloskey has recruited Auburn Vice Mayor Mike Holmes to run against the congressman. The billboard ads, he said, "are part of a coordinated strategy to try and weaken Republicans, including the president and the congressman."
