Clark Volunteers On the Ground in Ohio for Hackett!

Great thread over at the CCN about all that's going on on the ground out there in Ohio for the Hackett Campaign. People flew there, drove there, but got there for sure!

Included among the posts left on that thread was this one:

I write from Fallujah, Iraq. While not a Ohio resident, I feel the need towrite in support of Paul Hackett's bid for Congress -- the special eleciton to be held August 2. I worked with Paul in Fallujah over an intense three-month period, throughout a very difficult time - during and after U.S. Marine-led military operations in the city. He demonstrated the qualities of a real leader: brave, honest, conscientious and committed.

Washington needs to hear and benefit from more "ground truth" about Iraq -- and less posturing. Paul has Fallujah "street cred" when it comes to Iraq. Ohio and America deserve a representative in Congress who can help ensure that Iraq facts are presented in coming months, not spin.

Those of us still here, in the distant western Iraq deserts of Al Anbar Province and dangerous Sunni Triangle (including many Ohioans), would be well served by Paul Hackett in Congress. He would be able to hold Administration leaders accountable -- there has been far too little of that -- while we continue to work for success in Iraq.

I urge Ohio voters to give Paul the opportunity to continue to serve his country and Ohio, and in so doing, serve his fellow service members still in Iraq. We will be better off with him in Washington. The Iraq debate back home needs an Iraq war veteran's voice and perspective. Paul uniquely offers that.

8. This is the difference between a Democrat and a Republican:

A Democrat thinks of "hacking the vote" (I know it's a play on his name) as working hard, and doing the right thing.

A Republican thinks "hacking the vote" has to do with messing with the Diebolds.

16. Another effect of a Hackett win will be felt

by Republican Congress members. There is fear in Washington that Bush's declining popularity could mean backlash in '06. We can see the kind of desperate arm-twisting that it took for Bush to get CAFTA through the House---by two piddly votes---as Repubs start looking to cover their own asses. The district that Hackett is running in has been an easy Repub win for quite some time, so a Hackett victory would serve as an early indicator of trouble ahead, cause even more dissention among Republicans in Congress, making it more difficult for Bush to achieve his policy agenda.

The RNC is worried about this race.

...here's one fact her side is carefully guarding, knowing only about 10 percent of those registered will vote Tuesday: her extreme views. If voters from places like Mariemont, Anderson Township or Hyde Park knew fully what Schmidt believed, they might sit out the election or switch over for once to a Democrat, especially one like Hackett.

Here's the backup. During the campaign Schmidt is on leave as president of the Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati. Now, no one should begrudge her that commitment. It's personal and religious. But does that commitment affect her political judgment and fitness? Second District voters must decide that.

But go to her group's Web site, www.affirminglife.org/ index.asp, and click around through the many buttons and pages and you'll learn she and her cohorts abhor living wills. Huh? Isn't that the one lesson from the Republican exploitation of Terri Schiavo -- that we should immediately get willed up? She says no.

Her local Right to Life site to this day says Schiavo was executed. And that you shouldn't buy Levi jeans or anything Microsoft or Johnson & Johnson baby cream or read The New York Times. And they say no to the promise of embryonic stem cell research that could help our relatives and friends survive diseases and crippling paralysis.

Flat out, Schmidt is a political extremist. Of course, she thinks those fringe views put her in the 2nd District mainstream. I don't think so, not with the suburban masses or even the man farming a rural field while his wife packs lunches for the kids waiting for their long school bus ride.

No doubt Schmidt will turn out her Right to Life friends on Tuesday. They believe their numbers will be enough for at least a victory.

But the more mainstream voters come to realize she's a friend of Taft's and the leader of such a fringe group, they might conclude she's not Rob Portman, she's not like them. And putting in a Democrat, especially one who still wears the Marine uniform and has economic success but with colorful, earthy edges, could be the more comfortable choice.
